With the release of her nineteenth album, Slipstream, Bonnie Raitt is starting anew. The album marks her return to studio recording after seven years, with the launch of her own label Redwing Records. It delivers some of the most surprising and rewarding music of her remarkable career, which includes nine Grammy awards and several multi-platinum albums. Even the album's title is significant to Bonnie. "I'm in the slipstream of all these styles of music," she says. "I'm so inspired and so proud to continue these traditions, whether it's reggae or soul or blues. I'm in the slipstream of those who came before me, and I'm leaving one for those behind me. I'm holding up the traditions of the music that I love."

The Aquarium Age: Aug. 22-28

A hypersensitive astral air makes it difficult to establish and maintain an emotional equilibrium this week, and because skins are thin, reactions are likely to be immediate and exaggerated. Try not to misconstrue a casual, off-hand comment for a full-blown negative critique...(read more).

300 East Cycle Track

Salt Lake City is looking for innovative ways to improve our bicycle network and attract more people to bicycle. One design, called a cycle track, has been implemented in other U.S. cities like San Francisco, Missoula, Boulder, and Chicago. This may provide a safe, cost-effective design for more separated bikeways throughout downtown SLC in the next few years. These designs have been shown to attract more people to travel by bicycle, providing greater levels of comfort and safety.

300 East was chosen as a location for this prototype due to proximity to downtown, current popularity among bicyclists, and low automobile traffic. Two blocks of protected cycle track and one block of paint-buffered bike lane were constructed in July 2012. This project has been funded in part through Bikes Belong / REI.

Salt Lake City has constructed these two new designs in order to get feedback from bicyclists, motorists, residents, businesses, and the general public on how the City might proceed with constructing more of these separated bikeways. Those who complete the detailed surveys will be entered into a drawing for a cycling backpack, thanks to REI. See bikeslc.com for more info.
