Keeping EBI Bully-Free
Dear EBI Families:

We are excited to see you tomorrow for parent/teacher conferences! Please remember to knock on the door when it is time for your conference. Also, please check in at the office if you need childcare during your conference.

Here are a few announcements for this week:
  • Sagrario and Luís will be out next week, though Sagrario will be checking her e-mail. You may have seen a new person to our community at the East Campus this week during drop off. He is Roberto, and he will be covering for Luís. Please welcome him!
  • Please remember that students in grades Kinder and up need to be accompanied into the school if they arrive late. No children should be unaccompanied, at any time, in the parking lot.
  • Also, remember that we need to always follow the identified parking pattern. Many times parents park in parallel along the East fence of the East Campus for pick up. Instead of doing this, please follow the morning parking procedure!
  • We are always recruitng teachers! If you know of any Spanish-speaking teachers, please refer them to Gloria Costas!
Enjoy a wonderful weekend with your families!

Diversity Is an EBI Core Value!
board_diversity

Diversity is one of the EBI core values. Developing a space, environment and culture that promote respect; appreciation and coming to value the variety of experiences of our students, families and personnel help us create a culture in which everyone feels safe and encouraged to fully participate in and contribute to the learning process. In the picture, the EBI Board of Trustees participates in one of three diversity workshops they will enjoy this year.

EBI ¡Fiesta de Salsa!
salsa

On Friday, March 9th EBI families enjoyed the hottest Latin beats, ate delicious arepas, and most importantly, danced the night away!.

A HUGE thanks to Kirah Caminos for organizing this entire event!!! ¡Viva la Música!

Aventura: Pre-Kinder

In this picture, children are designing a pond and including the living things that inhabit them.

Pond Life:

The Aventura Pre-Kinder students have learned to identify a pond habitat and the different kinds of living things that form a part of this ecosystem. They have drawn illustrations of ponds with their biotic and abiotic elements. In the coming weeks, the children will begin to create their own "ponds" in the school courtyard. Throughout this activity, the children will not only learn more about science, but develop a stronger vocabulary in Spanish around this theme!

Aventura: Kinder-Second Grade

In this picture, Aventura students are recreating a vignette of prehistoric animals grazing.

Paleontology

This week, following the theme of prehistoric adaptation, the children compared and contrasted different dinosaurs in terms of their adaptive, defensive behaviors and dinosaur food sources.

Científicos Locos

In the coming weeks, the children will experiment with mini-inquiries working with concepts like:

  • Viscosity - through experiments the students will differentiate the viscosity of different liquids with foods with which they are familiar like honey, ketchup, water and oil.
  • Capilarity, again, through experiments, the students will understand and visualize one of the properties of water that permits water to be absorbed and transported throughout a plant for nutritional purposes.

El Teatro

In the coming weeks, the children will travel the world of theater, from its origens to its use today, on the set.

As always, the students, will enjoy "Viernes de Diversión" with cooking, film, face painting and dance!

Aventura: 3rd Grade - 5th Grade

In the photo, Aventura students are coloring puppets, the same ones that they will later assemble and to which they will give life! Each student imagined and named their character and, based on that, developed a dialogue with which they could interact with other puppets!

Kickball

Aligned with the love of this game and as a way to excite the spirit of community and interactive sports, in the coming weeks, the Aventura students will have the opportunity to continue playing kickball! They will improve their technique and learn more about the rules of the game.

Diseños en Movimiento

The students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their creativity and ingenuity designing mobile structures while using recycled materials while inspired by the practical use of their vehicles. In their construction, they will use small motors, corrugated cardboard, glue, batteries, magnets and paint!

Arte

This week, the students will finish their art projects and present them to the rest of the students.

Viernes de Diversión

In addition to the usual activities for Viernes de Diversión, this week the children will have the opportunity to participate in new, community-building activities; collaborative games; cooking and dance!

Nota:

In our effort to offer the kinds of activities the children want, in the coming weeks, the students will have the opportunity to respond to a questionnaire about the activities they want during Aventura.

Desde una Esquina Muy Lejana de la Biblioteca...
Mandarin books

We are well on our way to developing a Mandarin Chinese collection in Emeryville! Titles include: Legend of the Chinese Dragon by Marie Sellier, My First Book of Chinese Calligraphy by He Zhihong and Chinese Children's Favorite Stories by Mingmei Yip. Thanks to Lei Jin, EBI Mandarin teacher, for helping guide these selections!

Look for some new classroom materials in the upcoming weeks, as well as, workbooks, DVDs and games.

¡Pregúntale a la Especialista de Aprendizaje!
Typing

We are excited to announce a new pilot program for learning Keyboarding Skills. As our children grow up in the age of technology we are preparing them by addressing the need for typing skills. In the 3rd Grade we have a group of 8 new "recruits" to assist us in trying out our new program. Then, in 3-4 weeks, they will vote on whether or not to adopt this typing program for school-wide use. For 15 minutes, twice a week the students will work on Type to Learn 4 -  including more than 100 lessons and 5 different games to keep the students engaged and learning. We'll report back soon on the results of the pilot program, and, by May, we will have a typing/keyboarding program available to all students in grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades.
