Head Notes

Dear EBI Families:

Wow! Short weeks fly by!

We look forward to hearing what the children from Kinder, First and Second Grades have learned this week about Dr. King tomorrow during our community meeting. I encourage you to have a chat with them on the way to school in the morning about what they remember to reactivate their knowledge so they are better prepared to share during our meeting!

Speaking of community meetings, each week the teachers are taking advantage of this opportunity to teach children a variety of social skills. The students act out scenarios and role play how to resolve problems. Last week the children learned how to greet someone, while looking them in the eyes, by saying "good morning" or "how are you?". Of course these are culturally bound behaviors but considered to be pro-social in general in the U.S. Please practice with your children.

In our most recent lice check last week, we only found one nit! That being said, please continue your vigilance in this area!

Also, remember, EBI is pleased to unveil our very first Master Plan! Please take some time to review the West Campus plan, which is posted at the entrances to the East and West Campuses. The Plan, created by Emeryville architecture firm Ratcliff and Associates with input from the entire EBI community, will guide the development of our school facilities as our need for additional space grows in the coming years. The unveiling of the Master Plan is an exciting milestone in the growth of our community!

Thanks to everyone who has contributed energy and ideas to the Plan.

Please join us for a special community meeting to discuss the EBI Master Plan! The meeting will be held onTuesday, January 24th at 6:30 P.M. on the West Campus. Please contact Gloria to arrange for childcare at least 24 hours in advance.

Important Note: We will not have childcare available for parents who do not reserve it in advance.

Have a great weekend!

Jon

Sign Up for EBI'S Got Talent
talentshow
Tomorrow (Friday, January 20th) is your child's last chance to sign up for EBI's Got Talent. If your child is planning on participating, please make sure his/her form has been placed in the box near the office. We will be collecting all the forms at the end of the day so we can begin the process of organizing the show. We will not be accepting late entries. We are looking forward to seeing your children shine on stage!
Pre-Kinder: Shape and Space
Pre-Kinder. Tangram
In Pre-Kinder, students have been using Tangrams to help them develop their awareness of spatial relationships and problem solving skills. For example, they have been challenged to make rectangles out of two right-angled triangles. This type of inquiry helps our students develop fine motor skills and thinking skills. Students are also learning to express themselves as they choose different colors and placement of the geometric shapes. In this way they integrate math concepts into their current unit of inquiry, titled "The Artist In Me."

Kindergarten: Let's Play!
Kindergarten students are learning about board games as part of the unit of inquiry entitled "Let's Play" from the transdisciplinary unit how we organize ourselves. Parent volunteers have been joining the students in the classroom most mornings for games and helping them get organized, read instructions and follow the rules of the different games. Students are getting the chance to develop their math skills as they count, follow patterns, etc. They are also developing their social skills as they navigate turn-taking and winning and losing.
First Grade: Patterns around Us!

Patterns. First GradeIt's all about patterns in first grade art class! Pattern is a very important and often challenging concept in art, as well as in other subjects, such as math. Using a variety of media including collage (pictured here), watercolor pencil, chalk pastels and more, students are exploring and creating patterns of color, shape, texture and size. The more they create, the more intricate their patterns become.

Second Grade: Natural Phenomena

Tornado

The Second Graders are exploring how our world works through representations and models of natural phenomena. They have recreated the rock formation cycle and erosion in small models, facilitating their understanding of the effects of these phenomena in our world and lives. They are currently inquiring into the phenomenon of their choice using a variety of sources and will write a "scientific report" about their phenomena.

Third Grade: How We Express Ourselves
Third Grade. Modern ArtIn their art class students in 3rd Grade are researching some very special painters, artists of the vanguard movements of early modern art (through 1965). In the West campus library, art teacher Anita Sagástegui set up a 'mini museum' representing five of these vanguard movements and their artists: Fauvism, Cubism, Bauhaus, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. Students will be painting in the style of these movements each week as well as writing a report on a specific artist and her/his movement, describing the innovations in painting for which that particular artist was responsible. A very exciting unit indeed!
Fourth and Fifth Grade: Energy
Energy. Fourth and Fifth Grade
Fourth and Fifth Grade students are working with the transdisciplinary theme how the world works. Students exploring the concept of energy
experimented with solar cells. In this photo, they are using a lamp to charge a solar cell. Then, they connected the solar cell to a motor (with wires) to turn the motor on. Students worked with different sized solar cells to experiment with that impact that the size had on the motors.

Fifth Grade: Exploring the Concept of Volume
Fifth Grade. Volume
In math, the Fifth Graders have been exploring 3D shapes, their properties and how to calculate the volume and capacity of these forms. Using a hands-on approach, they have created cylinders out of paper and estimated their capacity and volume. Next week they will proceed to mathematically calculate the volume using the formula for the volume of the cylinder. How accurate do you think our estimations will be?
¡Pregúntale a la especialista de aprendizaje!
Reading to your child on a daily basis is one of the most important ways you can support your child's education. Scientists and researchers have found evidence that toddlers who are not read to on a regular basis are most often associated with reading difficulties at school age. Throughout the world, in many cultures, they found that a child's access to books is strongly linked to academic achievement. Among families with similar incomes and educational background, the number of books in the home is a good predictor of a child's reading ability!* For some great reads, and ideas for your individual child - check with your local library, or our the EBI school librarian, Rene Radusky - and keep reading!

Do You Need a Space for an EBI Meeting?
As you have probably noticed our school is  active, growing and rich with events. If you plan to use any school space for a meeting or event, you need to make a reservation so we can ensure you have your space! Please complete the form and return it to Sandra Millán at least one week in advance. She will contact you and let you know if we have availability. ¡Gracias!
Desde un rincón de la biblioteca...

First graders continue to study the climate in their chosen cities, this time by discussing the types of fruits and vegetables that grow in different parts of the world. This is a great exercise in vocabulary, as well, since they discuss how (and sometimes why) different Spanish-speaking countries call fruits and vegetables by different names!
