| TWN October News: Screenings, Workshops, Grants & More Janie's Janie and Make Out at Lincoln Center Join TWN for the premiere of the newly preserved 16mm prints of Janie's Janie and Make Out, two feminist films made by Newsreel in 1970, along with a panel including Newsreel filmmakers. Janie's Janie, by Geri Ashur, Bev Grant, Marilyn Mulford, and Stephanie Palewski, is a "personal documentary" about a working class woman in Newark as she comes to realize that she has to take control of her own life after years of physical and mental abuse. Make Out, directed by Geri Ashur and Peter Schlaifer, shows a young couple making out in a car while a voice over reveals the young woman's real thoughts about what is happening. The film Growing Up Female, directed by Julia Reichert and Jim Klein will also be shown in an event made possible by the Women's Film Preservation Fund of New York Women in Film and Television. The screening is followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Marjorie Rosen, with award-winning filmmakers Deborah Shaffer, Julia Reichert, Stephanie Palewski , Marilyn Mulford , Jim Klein, and Peter Barton. TWN and former members of Newsreel have been working to preserve our historic film collection. If you'd like to support this work, please visit our website. North American Premiere of The Amerindians In this documentary, filmmaker Tracy Assing makes a personal exploration of her roots as a member of the Santa Rosa Carib Community based in Arima. The community celebrates the Santa Rosa Festival annually and its Queen Valentina Medina is Assing's great aunt. In The Amerindians, Assing examines the way the story of indigenous people has been recorded. The structure of the Santa Rosa Carib Community, its politics and its belief system are also explored. The future is uncertain, and the Santa Rosa Carib Community may soon have to find a new Queen, but what does it mean to be the Queen? What does it mean to be Carib in Trinidad?
