NEW El Charango
Available on
DVD
Cerro Rico in Potosi, Bolivia, was discovered
by Spanish conquistadors in 1545, who
enslaved the local Indigenous people. As the
Spanish culture
spread into Potosi, the local people
discovered something they had never seen
or heard before: a stringed instrument.
Forbidden from ever playing the Spanish
guitar, the Indigenous miners copied it and
created the
charango. The story of the charango
symbolizes the larger struggle for human
rights and a quest to keep traditional
culture alive among indigenous people.

NEW Born in
Brazil Available on
DVD
The World Health Organization suggests a
maximum cesarean birth rate of 15%. Although
research shows that the majority of Brazilian
women prefer natural birth, statistics
provide a different story --- 65% - 85% of
all births in private hospitals in Brazil are
by cesarean section. Many obstetricians
attribute the high cesearean rate to patient
demand, when in fact the unnecessary surgery
is more convenient and lucrative for doctors.
Born in Brazil challenges the dominant
cultural belief that surgical delivery is the
modern, painless way to give birth, and that
cesareans are what women want.

the price of happiness.

Japan

| Asian Pacific and Asian Pacific Diaspora Studies
NEW Japan Across the
Seas Available on
DVD
The Japanese who have settled in Argentina
since the end of the 19th century came for
many reasons: escape poverty, wanderlust,
good farming, and
even a love for tango. Japan Across The
Seas
weaves together the tales of the old and the
young, the Japanese-born and the
second-generation, to tell the history of the
migrations that led to the establishment of
Japanese-Argentine communities in Misiones,
Buenos Aires, and Cordoba. In doing so,
Japan Across The Seas paints a complex and
multifaceted portrait of the diversity of the

Palpable
Invisibility of Life

wonders how can we make visible the
invisible? How can we "see" our lost loved

mourning. Derrida's philosophical theory is

medicine and the fragility of physicality.
