"Tyson" . . . A True Fighter
| | Another Pet Rescued
Meet Tyson . . . a two year old miniature pinscher rescued from a dismal life of homelessness. Tyson earned his famous name because he proved to be a true fighter. This mighty little dog is sweet and timid, compelling those that meet him to shower him with love and affection. Tyson was rescued from the streets by a good Samaritan - someone determined not to turn the other way when she saw the obvious signs of hunger and lack of care he had so obviously endured. The "Good Sam" was willing to take full responsibility of Tyson's care and brought him to The Village Vets to get the medical care he needed - including surgery to remove his left eye, which had been blinded by trauma. Through the efforts of the "Good Sam" and other rescue volunteers, he is now with Atlanta Pet Rescue, a pet adoption organization in midtown Atlanta that sponsors cats and small dogs in an effort to place them in permanent, well matched homes. There are many hardworking, devoted rescue volunteers, rescue organizations and animal shelters in the Atlanta area. SPOT (Stopping Pet Overpopulation Together) is an compiled list of these organizations and their websites/contact information. Whether you would like to adopt a rescue pet, or you have found a stray pet and are not able to personally provide the pet a home, SPOT is a great source for help. Please consider adopting a pet before you decide to purchase one. Click here to see some of the rescue adoption organizations we have supported over the years. |

Food Allergies
| | |
Itchy Skin ... Constant Scratching ... No Fleas??
Food allergy is also referred to as dietary allergy/hypersensitivity, food intolerance and most recently, cutaneous adverse food reactions (CAFR). Food "allergy" implies an immune system- mediated process, in comparison to "food intolerance" which is simply an abnormal response to ingested food. A true food allergy is the third most common cause of skin allergies in the dog, second to flea allergic and atopic (inhaled allergen, ie. seasonal) dermatitis. Up to 50% of the time pets have food allergy in combination with another type of allergy.
Food allergies are caused by a sensitivity to a particular component of diet (major or minor) such as beef, chicken, eggs, dairy, fish, lamb, corn, soy, wheat, food dye, preservative or stabilizer. The most common are beef, chicken, corn, wheat, cow's milk, soy, eggs and fish.
