The Importance
of Dental Care for Pets

toothbrushAn often overlooked aspect of pet care is maintaining healthy teeth and gums.  Oral disease is the most diagnosed health problem for dogs and cats visiting veterinary offices today.  Studies show that by age three, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of gum disease.  Gum disease, also called gingivitis, can cause your pet pain, possible loss of teeth.  The bacterial infection in the gum tissue can enter your pet's bloodstream and affect vital organs such as the heart, liver, lungs and kidneys.

Dental Radiology for Pets

Dr. Finke potraitOver the years we have seen significant advancements in veterinary dentistry.  This has lead to better diagnostics and treatment for dental disease resulting in healthier, longer lives for our dogs and cats.  One of the most important newer diagnostics has been dental radiology (xrays).

Dental xrays in dogs and cats are similar to those performed in humans, but because of precise positioning and the need to place equipment in the mouth, anesthesia is required.  With the development of digital x-rays, radiation exposure is kept to a minimum.
