Utilizing the Mid-Season Break
Cruiser bikeIt can happen either gradually or suddenly: motivation weakens, intervals are more of a chore than usual or you don't feel like going to a race. Tip of the Month: Positioning for the Final Sprint

Earning a position near the front in the final kilometer of a road race or crit is tough, but losing that position to a swarm is easy. That's why the the folks who are leading the pack at a kilometer to go are often nowhere to be seen at the line.

If you are in the front in the final kilometer or so of a race that is coming down to a field sprint and you feel like you are rolling along pretty easy, chances are there are people behind you who feel the same way but who want to be closer to the front, so if you are sitting it easily near the front in the final K, you are about to get passed by a swarm if you don't do something. There are two choices of what to do: 1) if you are farther out than you can sprint, keep looking behind you so you can jump on the move as it comes by. 2) If you are close enough to sprint to the line, just go for all you're worth. If you aren't sure, sprint but keeping looking for the train coming by.

Quote of the Month
"The problem for most of us is not that we aim for too high a goal and miss it, but that we aim too low and reach it."

Runner race finish

Athletes who focus on one or a few events per year often experience a particular pattern of emotions around the event. The last few days before a long-course triathlon, marathon or endurance bike ride there is a mix of anxiety and excitement. On event day, it all comes together and you complete your event, but with a few little things you'd like to do differently "next time." The next day or two you are high on life, you scan the calendar for the next event and start making plans to start training better than ever. Then, somehow when it comes time to ride or run or swim, the motivation just isn't there.
