Profiled Coach for Spring: Jeanie Bihlmaier
Coach Jeanie Bihlmaier Wenzel Coaching would like to recognize Coach Jeanie Bihlmaier of Provo, Utah as our Profiled Coach for Spring. Jeanie is nominated by her client Cara Bussell, who recently won the Tuscon Bicycle Classic Stage Race. "I have been coached by Jeanie since the spring of 2009," said Cara. "She helped me to upgrade from a Category 4 racer to a Category 1 racer in just two seasons. It is obvious to me that she would like her athletes to succeed at whatever goals they choose to set for themselves no matter how big or small. She is able to use her advanced knowledge of physiology to design the best program possible for each individual based on where the athlete is at a given time. She is dedicated, supportive, and has an inspiring work ethic." Thank you, Cara, for  your nomination, and congrats to Jeanie!

Featured Article: Hone Your Victory Salute
by Coach Steven Beardsley

It's midway through your racing season and you are in top form. You are accelerating effortlessly through the downtown streets of your hometown criterium. Friends and family have come to watch and cheer you on. Coming out of the last corner you accelerate past your last opponents and put them a few bike lengths behind you. Now there is only pavement between you and the finish line. You are chewing it up with every stroke of the pedals as you rocket to the finish.

Now what?

If you have to ask this question, you have not fully prepared for you race...

Spoke Trivia: Marshall "Major" Taylor

Marshall "Major" Taylor
(1878-1932) went from dressing in a military uniform and doing tricks on a bicycle to attract to attention in front of a bike store at the age of 14, to racing professionally starting at age 18 in 1896, nearly 23 years before Jackie Robinson was born. He is often described as one of America's first black professional athletes, although there were many African Americans playing baseball professionally in the years after the Civil War. Despite facing racism and being banned from tracks around the US (often after he started dominating the local competition), Taylor managed to earn 7 World Records by the time he turned 21. Between 1898 and 1899 he knocked an amazing 22 seconds off the paced 1-mile record, dropping it from 1:41 to 1:19 and becoming the second black world champion athlete after Canadian bantam-weight boxer George Dixon in 1890 and 1891. From 1902-1904, Major Taylor raced all over Europe, Australia and New Zealand. He retired at age 32 and died in obscurity 22 years later despite his heroic accomplishments on the bike and battling racism.
You can learn much more about the life of this fascinating athlete here.
