Greetings!

Despite the cold weather in many areas, the racing season is ON! As you prep for your events, check out Associate Coach Ron Castia's cold weather dressing tips.

It's also not too late in the season to work on your hamstring and quadriceps flexibility, especially when you may find yourself low in the drops in time trials and your first criteriums this month. Coach and Licensed Massage Therapist Paul Page Hanson writes about a stretching routine that you can maintain throughout the season.

This month we welcome Coach Meredith Nielsen of Berkeley, California, specializing in skills for beginning racers, and we also roll out our first history trivia feature.

Happy training and racing!

Dressing for Cold Weather Racing
By Associate Coach Ron Castia
Dressing for cold weather racing is a balance between wearing enough clothing so that your energy is used for performance rather than warmth without overdressing and overheating. This requires some planning before race day. Here are a few cold-weather dressing tips for early season races.

Dressing for a race will typically be lighter than dressing for a training ride since you need to be prepared for more maximal efforts and ongoing wind protection from the pack as well as less ability to add or remove layers on the go. The key is to protect...

New Coach Profile: Meredith Nielsen of Berkeley, CA
Wenzel Coaching welcomes Meredith Nielsen of Berkeley, CA.  Meredith is a Level 2 USA Cycling coach and the lead instructor for the Bay Area Beginning Bike Skills clinic. She enjoys working one on one with her clients and can help them meet goals whether they are training for general fitness, centuries or road racing.  As someone who found racing when she was 43, she understands the demands of life and racing and helps her clients learn to balance the two.

Training Tip of the Month: Pretend You Are Invisible On Your Bike

We've all heard too many stories of bike-car collisions and near collisions. In the majority of those bike-car crash stories, the driver will say something like, "I never saw him". Drivers turn left in front of cyclists wearing day-glo jackets. They pass cyclists and turn right across their paths a moment later. At night the problem is worse even when cyclists are lit up like Christmas trees, but this happens even in mid-day light too.

You don't want to have one of those stories of your own, but what can you do about it? Wearing bright clothing and putting on plenty of lights at night is a good start, but for real safety, pretend you are invisible.

Quote of the Month
"It doesn't matter how many times you fail. It doesn't matter how many times you almost get it right. No one is going to know or care about your failures, and neither should you. All you have to do is learn from them and those around you because... All that matters in business is that you get it right once. Then everyone can tell you how lucky you are."

~Mark Cuban, American Entrepreneur

Featured Article: Stretch for Success: Hamstring and Quadriceps Flexibility
by Coach
Paul Page Hanson

Muscle groups behave reciprocally - that is, hamstrings (large muscles at the back of the thigh) and quadriceps (large muscles at the front of the thigh) exchange information about their activity. For example, when hams flex, a signal is sent to relax the quads. It's important that the muscles don't work against each other, but that they co-operate. Excessive tightness can be a hindrance to the efficiency of this system. Muscles, tendons and ligaments do not need to be loose - there is evidence that looseness reduces power. But they ought not to be tight. Optimally toned is good, especially in respect of facilitating range-of-motion and reducing the incidence of pulls and tears.

Spoke Trivia

1912 World Champion bike sprinter Frank Kramer won US Sprint Nationals 16 consecutive times from 1901 to 1916, skipped a year, won in 1918 and then skipped two more years before winning Nationals for the last time in 1921 at age 41. He was as fast as ever in his final wins but had to ride a bigger gear to make the same speed on his way to beating competitors half his age.
