Greetings!
Getting to work late this week? You may have Tour-itis, an ailment with symptoms such as getting up as early as 3:30 am to watch 3-6 hours of live racing coverage. Symptoms also include yelling at the tv in the final 1 km and hoisting the remote above your head in your best Cavendish impression. How far we've come when there are six straight hours some days of Tour action!
If you're looking for a little more inspiration this month, check out the interview with racer and coach Melissa Sanborn of the Vanderkitten Racing Team. Also be sure to take in the Criterium Tips, learn about food quality in our Nutrition Q & A, and meet new coach Aubrey Curtis of Montana.
As always, we have the Resource and Quote of the month as well as Client Successes. Send your feedback to newsletter@wenzelcoaching.com. Happy Training!

Q. My roommate and I are trying to bring our weight down. My strategy is to simply cut back on portions, though I haven't really changed the makeup of what I eat. Although my roommate hasn't really cut down the amount of food she's eating, she's changed the kinds of food she's eating, including many gluten-free foods and eating healthier fat sources such as more avocados and nuts. My question is, is a calorie just a calorie? If you are eating healthy food but consuming more calories than you burn, you'll still continue putting on weight or stalling in weight loss, won't you?
A. The question is good on two levels. First of all, healthful foods such as whole grains, fruits, and vegetables are ideal to supply necessary carbohydrates to support endurance sports. Gluten-free foods supply carbohydrates but ...

Training Tip of the Month: Save Your Matches in a Crit
Many riders are under the impression that criterium
riding is all about repeated explosive accelerations. Nothing could be farther
from the truth, at least if you want to win. In fact, the most successful crit
racers minimize accelerations, doing as few of them as possible and making them

a few of them:

Featured Article: Passion and Cycling: An Interview with Melissa Sanborn by Wenzel Coaching Expert KC Wilder As a sport psychologist and researcher, I chose to interview racing cyclist and Wenzel Coach Melissa Sanborn of Vanderkitten Racing for this issue of the newsletter. The article is simply a transcript with questions related to her passion, bicycle racing. Melissa's interview expresses her passion for bicycle racing that is part of her self-story and desire to solve the puzzle related to her performance in bicycle racing. In that light, she is the story-teller. I believe that you will read this story and be inspired yourself to achieve your goals in sport, and life. Prominent researcher Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (1996) states, "the creative process begins with the sense that a puzzle or conflict needs to be solved." May you work towards solving your own puzzle by reading the candid responses by Melissa Sanborn.
