Training Tip of the Month: Beg or Borrow a Feed
bottle handouttIn summer time road races, promoters often offer a feed zone where a rider can get a handup of a bottle or food. In a long hot race, having one more or one fewer bottles of water can make more difference than months of training. Don't be afraid to carry one or more bottles in your pockets in addition to two or more on your bike, or, in very hot climates, to use a hydration pack. When you can't carry enough water for optimal hydration for the whole race, plan to get a feed. That means recruiting someone to feed you. Significant others and parents or kids are possible choices, but when you can't find someone to come to the race with you, you are still not out of luck. If you ask around, you'll most likely find someone who is feeding a rider in another category and who won't be busy when you come by. Ask for help. Warning though: A feeder solicited at the race in this way may or may not have the needed skills, so it's not a bad idea to bring several bottles more than you will need and recruit two potential feeders (be sure to tell them what you're doing so they won't feel you've been ungrateful when you don't take their bottle).

Getting the most from your coach during the competitive season
While many athletes contact their coaches to share their competitive successes or talk over improvement strategies after any less-than-stellar performances, some athletes seemingly go silent with their coaches as the race season comes to a peak. If you find yourself to be one of the athletes who thinks you may not have much to say, think again; your coach likely has more helpful advice to share than you may realize. You coach can help with just about anything you might be uncertain about, and may also help you find things you should be doing differently, even though you are not unsure at all. Here are some topics Wenzel coaches have discussed with their clients in recent weeks:
