Wenzel Coaching Newsletter June 2008
Greetings!

It's almost July, and one thing that many athletes have in common at the moment is that they are in peak form. Once a racer hits peak form, it can usually be maintained for 6-10 weeks, and after that form begins to wane. Athletes who experience this post-peak let-down often try to train harder to get the peak back, but with usually the exact opposite effect they are hoping for. The better approach is to take a short period of very light training for recovery, followed by a rebuilding of fitness with some new base training and a new transition to intensity for a second peak. Check out this month's feature article on mid-season breaks to see if a break might be a good plan for your near future.

Nutrition Q and A:  How to Eat Like a Pro
with Nutritionist Heather D'Eliso Gordon, RD, CSSD
foodQ: Now that I am in full swing with my racing season I am noticing that I am not recovering well after races or hard training days. My legs are heavy and I just don't have that edge I need for the end of the race. What can I do to feel my best and get more out of all this training I have invested in?

A: This is a great question that many athletes pose right around this time of year. When you've taken the training advice from your coach and you've spent money on new gear and sacrificed your social life to compete, it can be frustrating not to see results. Becoming a top athlete involves looking at the whole picture: physical, mental, social and emotional. Many athletes don't realize that there is more to the physical piece than just training - You need to look at what you're eating and what's missing in your diet. Here's why:

Give Me a Break
by Associate Coach David Peckinpaugh

Picture this: It's summer and races are frequent and fast. You've been training consistently since the fall and have been racing strong for the last several months. You have been feeling particularly strong and have had several good races in the last two to three months. You planned on racing strong all through the spring and summer months but recently you have noticed your performance has been a little flat and athletes you used to beat on a regular basis are beating you in recent races. You figure they must be training harder than you so you start to add some extra intensity and hard training to your normal routine only to find your performance continues to suffer. Finally, frustrated with the way things are going you decide to end your season and wait until next year only to repeat the process again and again.

This all too familiar scenario is played out frequently for many endurance athletes.
