This month's newsletter is a primer for your summer racing with some of the basics of tactics and race fueling that often get overlooked. Check out this month's article on tactics by 2007 Arizona Rider of the Year, Coach Brian Forbes and read up in this month's racing tip by Head Coach Scott Saifer on getting your share of carbohydrates.
This month we also congratulate Associate Coach Julie Hudetz as Coach of the Month, and as always we have the Resource of the Month, Quote of the Month and more Client Successes than ever!
We welcome your feedback. Please write to newsletter@wenzelcoaching.com or call 503-233-4346 with your comments, race stories and ideas.~ Kendra Wenzel, Scott Saifer, and the Staff of Wenzel Coaching |

Racing Tip of the Month: Eat Your Carbs! Eat carbohydrates! Eat carbohydrates while
you ride, eat carbohydrates while you race, eat carbohydrates while
you train. Eat carbohydrates any time you exercise for 30 minutes or more. Eat carbohydrates every 15-20 minutes while exercising. Eat carbohydrates
while exercising even though you aren't hungry. Eat
carbohydrates while exercising even if you are trying to lose weight. Eat
as much carbohydrate as you can absorb on the bike. For small people that may be
200-250 Calories per hour. For larger people it may be up to 350 Calories per
hour. More is better so long as you are not getting full or bloated.
Eat carbohydrates! You'll ride better, ride longer, ride stronger, and get
faster. Off the bike eat healthy mix of fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean
protein sources to get balanced amounts of carbohydrate and protein with a
small amount of fat. If you are trying to lose weight, eat before during and
after rides and diet the rest of the time. Talk to your coach or one of our
Nutrition Experts for details. |
Coach of the Month: Julie Hudetz
This month's Coach of the Month is Associate Coach Julie Hudetz of Boulder, CO. Julie has 15 years of race experience including four years with the Saturn Professional Cycling Team. She competed professionally after the birth of her daughter and understands the the needs of busy athletes. Here's what a client had to say about Julie:
"I owe
my success to Julie. She helped me with everything from adjusting the training
schedule to dietary needs. Julie takes a real world approach to training from the
standpoint that she understands that life is hectic and that unless you are a
professional racer, it is difficult to stick to the training regimen to a tee.
Julie makes sure that the VITAL parts of the training program are always
covered and makes you feel comfortable if you have to miss a training session
or make an adjustment." ~Tim Gallegos

Quote of the Month
"Remember to 'bank' your racing powers until you seriously require them, and you will then find that the interest is there as well as the capital when you start to draw on the account."
~Arthur Newton, 5-time winner of the Comrades Marathon

Resource of the Month: Fast Food-The Healthy Kind Summer is upon us and between training, competing, work, family and social obligations it's hard to find time to whip up a meal, let alone one that is healthy. Cooking Light has a great menu of fast, easy and healthy recipes to help you refuel between your activities. In addition to providing great recipes for health conscious people, they also sponsor a men's and women's professional cycling team.

For every
action in the race by a competitor or teammate, there is always a choice of
reactions by every other rider in the race. In the excitement of being in a racing
pack, it is important to recall the basics of strategy that can help you choose
your own actions or reactions that can help you win or force you to lose a race.
Specifically, there are several different scenarios during a race that, if done
right, can win you the race or help a teammate win the race.
