Each month, the Wenzel Coaching newsletter brings you a free or economical resource to help you enhance your training. This month, we bring you Medline Plus, a government sponsored site that brings you everything from a medical encyclopedia to current news and studies.

This month's resource provides health facts and ideas on everything from fitness to health conditions and prescription and nonprescription drugs. Brought to you from the National Libaray of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health.

The websites found in the "Resource of the Month" are in no way associated with Wenzel Coaching and we are not responsible for any information they contain.

Greetings!

Welcome to the Holiday Season!

Late November through the New Year's Day can present the biggest challenge to athletes of all disciplines. Cross is winding down and the road, mountain and triathlon off season training is moving along but with still at least three months to go before most will be racing again. Meanwhile, the goodies are everywhere and celebration meals have plates heaped high. To make it even worse, it's cold and wet and the daylight hours are short.

Rather than curling up with your friends Ben & Jerry to watch Grey's Anatomy and have a good cry, use our handy Holiday Eating Survival Guide to get you to your New Year's Resolution. Also check out coach Jonathan Puskas' power meter review this month and don't forget to peruse the potential gift ideas both for the cyclists you love (and yourself!)

Last but not least, check out our latest new feature the Power Training Tip of the Month. Whether you train with a power meter or not, you'll learn a bit about how they can be used and take away some advice helpful for all kinds of training.

As always, the staff at Wenzel Coaching welcome your feedback! Please feel free to write to [email protected] with your comments, race reports and topic suggestions.

Keep on spinning, and call your coach!

The Wenzel Coaching Quote of the Month:

"Eat before you are hungry. Drink before you are thirsty. Rest before you are tired. Cover up before you are cold. Peel off before you are hot. Don't drink or smoke on tour. Never ride just to prove yourself."

~Paul de Vivie, Early French touring cyclist and proponent of the derailleur

    with Head Coach Kendra Wenzel

Ever hear your coach say "don't set that goal?"

My usual holiday eating struggle used to go like this: I’d enter my parent’s house with the best of intentions. I’d plan to limit myself to two glasses of wine, one helping of the usual turkey or ham, mashed potatoes, gravy, and all the trimmings, and one small slice of pumpkin pie with just a touch of whipped cream.

Right out of the gate I’d already be doomed... Read more>>>

  • Power Training - How the current power meters stack up
  • By Coach Jonathan Puskas

Power - It’s a critical component of your cycling success. As a cyclist, power data can help you identify performance improvements caused by changes in equipment, positioning, and most importantly training methods. As power meters become increasingly “affordable,” athletes frequently ask me if they should purchase a power meter. In this article we'll address the following common questions:

    1. Do I need a Power Meter?
    2. For what types of workouts are power meters most effective?
    3. What type of power meter should I buy?

Power Training Tip of the Month
  • Decreased power at constant heart rate or perceived exertion, or increased heart rate at the same power under similar conditions of weather, terrain and warm up compared to previous days is a sure sign that something is wrong. If you ever experience a higher heart rate for the same perceived exertion or power, you need recovery or to improve some recovery related behavior. You may be sick, underfed, dehydrated, over-stressed or just tired from training, but in any case the correct thing to do on this day is to take a recovery day and also to try to figure out what else you need to improve to eliminate such bad days.

You may hear that "power is power is power" meaning that power is not affected by fatigue, dehydration, heat etc. This is true, but training for the day should be affected by these things. Blindly riding in your power zone because that is what you are supposed to do will likely lead to over-training and poor performance.
