Resource of the Month: Cycle Fit Centre
Each month, the Wenzel Coaching newsletter brings
you a free or economical resource to help you
enhance your training. This month, we bring you
www.cyclefitcentre.com
Cyclefitcentre is the online home of Steve Hogg,
considered by many (including our own Scott Saifer
and several other Wenzel
Coaches) to be the world authority in bike fit.
Steve brings a fresh perspective and critical eye to
many difficult bike fit and biomechanics issues, and
his site is a great resource for anyone wanting to
better understand how rider & machine should
interact.
The websites found in the "Resource of the Month"
are in no way associated with Wenzel Coaching and

Greetings!
Vive Le Tour ... As I write this I've just returned from
a viewing party of the l'Alpe d'Huez stage of the Tour
de France at a local restaurant that was packed with
race enthusiasts. How far we've come from the days
when we used to beg the bartender to flip over to
ESPN2 so that we could catch the half hour recap.
What a time to be a cyclist. Forget any scandals --
the Tour de France motivates us and reminds us of
what a beautiful and lifetime sport we practice. For
instance, we've got championships for riders all the
way into their 90's. You should have seen the 50+
master Mountain Cross racers at the NORBA Nats last
weekend battling it out like kids on a BMX course.
So this weekend, pull up a chair in the a.m. to watch
our new heroes at le Tour, and then head out for one
of those rides or races that remind you why you love
to cycle so much.
Also this month, check out coach Rene's Wenzel's
newsletter article below on what we can learn from
rider roles at the pro level. What he has to say may
surprise you.
Keep an eye on Wenzel Coaching's upcoming camp
and clinic schedule as well. We'll be holding clinics at
both ends of the US this fall and we'll be bringing
back the Mallorca camp in April of 2007, too.
As always, the staff at Wenzel Coaching welcome
your feedback! Please feel free to write to
newsletter@wenzelcoaching.com.
Keep on spinning,
Ren Wenzel, Kendra Wenzel & Scott
Saifer
The Wenzel Coaching Quote of the
Month:
"I still feel that variable gears are only for people over
forty-
five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your
muscles
than by the artifice of a derailleur? We are getting
soft...As
for me, give me a fixed gear!"
- - Henri Desgrange, inventor of the Tour de
France, L'Equipe article of 1902

Learning from the Tour de France |
|
with Head Coach Rene Wenzel
When we watch pro races on television, the roles of
racers all look so well defined. Robbie McQwen is a
SPRINTER and Fred Rodriguez the LEADOUT MAN that
takes Robbie to the 200m mark. Michael Rasmussen a
CLIMBER who will be PROTECTED by his teammates
going into a climb, and Floyd Landis is the ALL-
AROUNDER who is expected to excel in all facets of a
particular race. He will have the full support of his
team in whatever capacity necessary. Like these
riders, nearly any developed rider can be put in a
relatively specific category of racer type or “job” as
mentioned above – and therefore fit into a relatively
specific role on a team.
The key word here is developed. Read more >>>>>

Coach Profile - Taitt Sato |
|
Taitt Sato exemplifies the athlete who juggles career
and sport successfully. Having moved up through
the ranks to become a Category 1 racer while holding
down a full-time job as an attorney in Oakland,
Taitt has a deep understanding of how to get the
most out of every minute on the bike, while balancing
life's other commitments.
Taitt first got into cycling when her mom gave her an
oversized bike, which she learned to ride despite the
less-than-optimal bike fit.(She could have used our
Resource of the Month!). Who would have guessed
that her early exploits sneaking out of the house late
at night would involve bike rides? She got
caught and grounded only once, showing at a young
age the caginess that has helped her to podium
finishes at big events like the Cougar Mountain
Classic and the 2002 USCF Masters National Road
Race. More recently, she has taken a break from
her career as a lawyer to race full time, and Just last
week scoring a 3rd place overall finish at Superweek,
one of the toughest cycling competitions in the
country.
Taitt enjoys working with athletes at all ends of the
competitive spectrum. Asked about recent coaching
successes that she is proud of, she highlights the
progress made by one of her "non-sprinter" clients
who has moved up from mid-pack finishes to regularly
contest sprint finishes. "It's rewarding to show
someone how to do something that she hasn't
expected to be able to do," commented Sato.
In juggling racing and career, Taitt offers some
practical advice. "Train in the morning, limit after-
work socializing to once a week, pay extra attention
to your diet and remember to have fun on the bike.
You can do well with limited training time as long as
you are focused and are able to create goals that
keep you motivated."
Taitt herself has been a Wenzel athlete since 2001,
and she comes to Wenzel Coaching with five years of
regional and national level road-racing experience.
She is a certified USA Cycling Level 3 coach. Taitt
will be participating in the Wenzel coaching seminar
for women racers this fall in the San Francisco Bay
area.

Coach Profile - Jolene Wilkinson |
|
Experience and dedication are two words that
effectively
describe Wenzel Coaching’s Jolene Wilkinson. Based
out of
Idaho, Jolene draws on a tremendous amount of
personal
racing and training experience to offer athletes the
ingredients they need to meet their personal goals.
She has
competed at the elite level of a variety of sports,
all of which have
played a defining role in her life. The same drive that
has
brought Jolene success in competition is also evident
in her
ever-expanding educational credentials. Her
background in several related fields allows her to
provide athletes with the latest information in the
world of
sport science and nutrition.
Jolene has been an accomplished athlete from a very
early
age first competing at the elite level as a gymnast.
Her
desire to remain competitive then led her to
triathlons
where
she has garnered many outstanding results including
wins in
the National Championships and World Championships
as well
as finishing the Ironman in Kona. She currently
competes as
a professional triathlete, category 3 road racer, and
is
gaining new insights to the limits of her physical and
mental
endurance by trying her hand at adventure
racing.
As a coach, Jolene understands that all athletes
define
success differently and she enjoys helping athletes
attain
their personal goals. Additionally, she understands
that
effective coaching must be delivered in the manner
that best
suits the individual athlete's needs - not just a "one
size fits
all" approach.
Whether you are looking to improve on your past
performances or a ready to try your hand at training
for
triathlons, road racing, running, or swimming...look no
further than Jolene and take one step closer to
meeting your
goals!
