Thoughts to Ponder
The New National Ed Tech Plan 2010

Over the past few weeks, I've been reading and digesting an article in the T.H.E. Journal regarding the National Ed Tech Plan 2010.  I ended up downloading the Executive Summary and a number of documents related to UDL - Universal Design for Learning - which is the model of learning endorsed by the plan.
Since video conferencing is CILC's major focus and my personal passion, I reread the document through the lens of this technology to see if, how, and/or where it might help to meet the goals of the plan.  I'm hoping each of you will join me in this endeavor and that we can share our thoughts and ideas with each other in the CILC NING.

Background
"The plan calls for applying the advanced technologies used in our daily personal and professional lives to our entire education system to improve student learning, accelerate and scale up the adoption of effective practices, and use data and information for continuous improvement.

The model of learning described in this plan calls for engaging and empowering personalized learning experiences for learners of all ages.  The model stipulates that we focus what and how we teach to match what people need to know and how they learn.  It calls for using state-of-the-art technology and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) concepts to enable, motivate, and inspire all students to achieve, regardless of background, language, or disabilities."

Thinking It Through
Since there is a lot to digest, even in the executive summary, let's focus on the section entitled Learning: Engage and Empower. I thought perhaps the following two (2) statements would be a good place for us to begin our discussions.

"Technology should be leveraged to provide access to more learning resources that are available in classrooms and connections to a wider set of 'educators,' including teachers, parents, experts, and mentors outside the classroom.  It also should be used to enable 24/7 and lifelong learning."

"For students, using these real-world tools creates learning opportunities that allow them to grapple with real-world problems - opportunities that prepare them to be more productive members of a globally competitive workforce." (under subheading: What and How People Need to Learn.)

Join Me
I believe that, as proponents of video conferencing technology, we should each take a proactive stand by exploring these concepts and developing useful and viable strategies to help our organizations/schools meet this goal of improving student learning.

Let's combine our great minds from all around the globe@  Won't you join me in the CILC NING to share your thoughts and ideas as well as learn from others?  I've posted each of the statement with a guiding question as a unique thread in the forum area.  (under the Discussions tab)
