Planning for a Child's Education Through a Will or Trust |
|
Says Attorney Robert Sakai:
"Many people want to customize what happens to their assets after they die, in which case they should have a will or a trust.
"Normally when a person who wants a trust has a minor child or grandchildren, a Trustee can be authorized to pay for a child's education until the child is old enough to handle money.
"Not everyone needs a will or a trust. If you die in California without a will or a trust, everything does not automatically go to the state. If you are married, your spouse will receive all your community property assets. Your spouse also will receive part of your separate property assets and the rest of your separate property will go to your children or grandchildren, parents, sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews or other close relatives."
