What Have I Done So Far?
Anna Laveria MaySince being sworn in several months ago, I've been busy! Two weeks ago ago at our event hosted by fellow Chamber of Commerce member Alex Gamarra of Acapulco Bar & Grill, I updated constituents and supporters on what I've been doing so far:

Instilling Stronger Focus on Council Agenda Items by being the only Council Member to repeatedly abstain on items I felt did not belong on the Agenda. These items included several State propositions, a regional measure and a resolution over which Hayward city government has no direct, measurable control. My goal is for our city leaders to focus on Hayward, which is what our constituents elected us to do. (Contact me for details.)

As New Commissioner for the Alameda County Housing Authority (low-income Section 8 tenancies & public housing), I introduced what I'm told is the first landlord in history to the Commission. My goal in making a landlord a Commissioner is to get more landlords to offer their properties to Section 8 tenants. This serves a dual purpose to entice all surrounding Alameda County property owners to accept a greater share of Section 8 tenancies. (Contact me for details.)

As the City of Hayward's New Economic Development Committee Liaison and the Council Member with the most extensive business background, I pushed for more internet savvy: i.e. to secure the domain www.HaywardAutoRow.com, pushing for adding the city's web site (www.hayward-ca.gov) to all printed materials, promoting the city web site in outgoing city employee phone greetings & email signatures, and putting together a Film & Media Task Force to instill civic pride and to help with Hayward's public relations image and economic development. (Contact me for details.)

Civic Engagement: I've been working hard at promoting all the virtues of Hayward. Many Hayward residents & businesses are not familiar with our new movie theatre, shoreline, panoramic views, municipal airport, parks, trails and golf courses, the Sulphur Creek Nature Center, Hayward's California State University, Chabot College, etc. Lots of people still don't know about Hayward's assets and all the exciting new developments in our city! Please help me to spread the word...

Recent Hayward City Council Activities:

Graffiti Ordinance adopted: Yes, I am on record as referring to Singapore's anti-graffiti policy as being quite effective. I also questioned how much money has been spent recently on graffiti abatement. Can you believe it's $300,000 in the last six months?! My suggestion was that we use a greater portion of that $300K on police presence which in my opinion will curb crime in general. CLICK HERE for a copy of this ordinance.

Green Building ordinance adopted: I'm concerned that this ordinance drives up construction costs in an already recessed market. I also believe the way it's written adds costs to homeowners who want to add on or re-model their homes with projects of more than 500 square feet. It also applies to non-residential remodels or construction of 1000 square feet or more, which in my opinion will be a deterrent to new small businesses. My preference is that participation be voluntary rather than mandatory. CLICK HERE for a copy of this ordinance.

(In January, the city council's agenda will include a status report on the downtown mini-loop which is an item of contention for Hayward residents and businesses...)
