Rags to Real Estate
Sharon arrived in California from Mississippi with two
kids and $60 in her pocket. Accustomed to no indoor
plumbing back home, Sharon armed herself with a 33-
gallon garbage bag full of her belongings and made
for the streets of San Francisco. After struggling with
child-care, welfare & homelessness, Sharon landed a
government job that "people pray for" with great
benefits and job protection. This enabled her to buy a
home in what she refers to as a "not so desirable
neighborhood with a bad reputation" and bars on the
windows. Unphased by this Richmond neighborhood
after living in San Francisco's Tenderloin district,
Sharon and her children fixed up the house and made
it their home. A proud, God-loving black woman,
Sharon proudly told me the story of her struggles as a
single mother and her success and eventual profit
from purchasing real estate for the first time...
