Dear Friends,
On January 20th we watched a monumental history making moment as President Barack Obama took the oath of office. I hope you all are inspired as much as I am as we look forward to a brighter 2009. This milestone has opened the possibilities and dreams of our youth and families beyond what we could have ever imagined before.
We definitely ended 2008 on a good note. Due to many generous individual donations towards our Santa's Helpers Donation
Drive, our youth had a truly amazing, joyful and memorable Holiday
Season. Each youth received gifts, enjoyed a fun-filled Holiday Party
and enjoyed on a delicious warm Holiday dinner amongst caring staff and peers. We
are extremely thankful to our friends and family for giving our foster youth priceless
gifts and wonderful lasting memories.
On another note, our Hip Hop 360 youth from Montgomery Elementary Middle School
successfully performed edgy breakdancing moves at the 4th Annual
Hip Hop Holiday Extravaganza. See the story below for more details and view pictures from the wonderful event.
With many positive accomplishments also comes trepidation as our state
leaders struggle to find solutions to our budget woes. We have already
seen the economic impacts trickling down to the non-profit human service
industry, with Corporate and Individual giving down nearly 65% the stress upon families and their children is great than ever. We’ve seen major Government bailouts to the financial and automotive industry, but we have yet to see a bailout to the Community-Based Social Service agencies that need it the most.
Unity Care is developing strategies to reduce the financial impact on our
services by working smarter and more efficient. We are looking into all alternative
options
to meet the growing and critical needs of our youth and families, but we need your help and partnership to make it through these difficult
times.
Take a minute to evaluate what resources you may have to help support our
foster youth and families. If a cash donation is simply not an option, consider
giving an in-kind gift. Look into your closet or garage and most
likely you'll stumble upon a new household appliance, furniture, clothing,
or new gifts that you can donate to a child in need.
Best wishes,
André Chapman

Unity Care
Receives the Prestigious
Drum Major Award
Unity Care
Group, Inc. was excited to be the recipient of the 2009 Drum Major Award at
the recent 29th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Luncheon held on Monday, January 19, 2009. The awards luncheon, presented
annually by the African American Community Services Agency (AACSA),
acknowledges the Life,
Legend and Legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and was hosted
at the Wyndham Hotel in San Jose.
Annually, the Drum Major Award is
presented to organizations that have demonstrated an outstanding service to
the community.
Unity Care President and CEO, André
Chapman expressed his tremendous joy and appreciation for receiving
this important award. “The Drum Major award means a great deal to me and to our
dedicated staff at Unity Care. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke of a servant leader and with our recent 15th Anniversary
celebration, the inauguration of Barack Obama, the first African American President, and in the midst of these challenging economic times, this award
uplifts our spirits and encourages us to continue the tireless and often
difficult task of making a positive difference in the lives of our most
vulnerable youths and families. We thank the AACSA for recognizing
our efforts to enrich the lives of at-risk youth.”
4th Annual Hip Hop 360 Holiday Extravaganza gets
a Standing Ovation
Over sixty Hip Hop 360 students from Montgomery Elementary Middle School in San
Jose showed off several months of after school practice sessions with a
phenomenal breakdancing show. With the guidance of Unity Care's Hip Hop
360 dance instructors, three separate youth groups proudly executed slick dance
moves in front of over two hundred family, friends, teachers, and community members on Thursday,
December 18, 2008.
This event would not have been possible without the support our funding partners such as
The City of San Jose HNVF and the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's
Health.
