Welcome from André Chapman

Dear Friends,

As our leaders scramble to resolve failures in our financial system, Unity Care continues to search for solutions to meet the growing needs of the children and families we serve.  With that said, we intend to make this a joyous Holiday Season for our children and families who often go without the necessities that many of us may have experienced during our childhood years. The Holiday Season is an extremely difficult time for our children, as it reminds them of the traumatic experiences that caused them to be in our care. We invite you to partner with us during this holiday season to help us reach our goal of providing every child and family in our program with a memorable experience.  Please take a moment to donate a cash or in-kind gift today!

Below you will also find information on program enhancements and new services in our Monterey County Campus Program, an update on our Summer of Learning Program as well as our highly anticipated Focus Media Project showcase set for Friday, October 10th.

Finally, we’re preparing to celebrate our 15th Year Anniversary by hosting an Open House on Thursday, November 13th at our Home Office in San Jose. I personally invite you to join us as we celebrate, showcase and highlight our tremendous milestones and accomplishments over the past 15-years of serving children and families throughout our communities. I hope you’ll continue to support Unity Care in our efforts towards another 15 years of “creating healthier communities through life-long partnerships” with our youth and families.  Everyone is welcome so please RSVP today!

Best wishes,

André Chapman

Monterey Campus Program Enhancements

Unity Care recently made program enhancements to our Monterey Campus program, which provides residential care as well as a full range of services to rehabilitate high needs youth.  We also added new services to the program in order to align with current best practice models, which are needs based.

Ultimately, the move to a needs based service means:

  • No Time Restrictions - youth will receive treatment as needed without time restrictions

  • One-on-One Meetings Twice A Week - staff will have the appropriate time needed to plan and work closely with each youth by meeting with each youth twice a week

  • Youth Out of County Accepted - Unity Care will now be able to accept High Needs Youth (Level 14) foster youth statewide

Our Monterey Campus is located on a sprawling seven-acre property and remains one of the very few residential care providers for high needs youth in Northern California.  The campus includes a boys' home (6 beds) and girls' home (6 beds) for youth ages 12 to 17 years of age.  The site offers a full range of therapeutic treatment programs for youth with behavioral and mental health issues stemming from abuse and neglect.  The goal of the program is to rehabilitate youth in a safe, secure and loving environment, where they can successfully complete the program and transition back into the community.

Foster Youth Express Deeply Personal Life Experiences Through Creative Arts

Weeks of blood, sweat and dedication have finally paid off.  Unity Care's Focus Media Project facilitators worked along side Unity Care's foster youth for six weeks in the summer and helped them create individual and deeply personal creative arts projects.

On Friday, October 10th, these courageous youth will showcase their finished product; a magazine comprised of prose, poetry, photography, as well as individual studio recorded music.

Interested in attending? Please contact Linda Vu for more info at (408) 971-9822.

The Focus Media Project was made possible thanks to the generous grants from the Winifred Clive Johnson Foundation and Arts Council Silicon Valley.

Summer Olympics Gives Youth a Fun-Filled Day at the Park

On August 13th, over one hundred Unity Care youth and staff spent a beautiful summer day at a local park. They enjoyed delicious barbecue, raced through an obstacle course, played board games, created unique works of art, showcased their cultural art displays that reflected each group home and competed in a talent show.

Youth Graduate from Youth Revolution

A group of youth successfully graduated from the Bill Wilson Center's week-long Youth Revolution program.  The free youth leadership training program's goal is to break the cycle of poverty and mentality among at-risk youth in San Jose.  Additionally all graduates earned high school and college credit.
