Welcome from André Chapman

Dear Friends,

As summertime quickly approaches, we are working hard to ensure our youth and families have the opportunity to experience an interactive, challenging and explorative fun filled summer. Join us in these efforts by supporting our Summer of Learning program and by making a gift TODAY. Your gift will provide a Child with a summer experience he our she will never forget.

We would like to thank Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley and their partners Intel and Ernest & Young for the recent renovation of two Unity Care Treatment Homes for foster youth. Even in light of our tough economic times we have great people in our community who are reaching out and making a difference in the lives of Foster Youth. Thank you all for your support.

Lastly, please be sure to read the very candid and touching article that was written by one of our foster youth, who describes his struggles of growing up in the Foster Care System.

Best wishes,

André Chapman

Support Our Summer of Learning

Think back to your childhood summers and remember a time when you enjoyed a fun and adventurous family camping trip in the great outdoors.  Or perhaps during high school you spent the summer exploring career options by visiting a college campus on completing a summer internship.

While many of us have positive childhood summertime memories and experiences, many youth in our community, particularly foster youth have traumatic memories stemming from abuse and neglect.

Unity Care's Summer of Learning program provides our most vulnerable youth and families the opportunity to experience summertime traditions, which will help establish positive behaviors and build lasting relationships.  We strengthen these youth and families by providing access to a full range of activities that provide exposure to higher education, engaging physical activities, encourage creativity and will broaden their horizons.

With your help, these kids will have a meaningful and valuable summer.

Please take a moment to sponsor a youth's summertime activity.

Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley

Gives our Homes a Makeover

On Saturday, April 19th and 26th Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley (RTSV)in collaboration with corporate sponsors Intel and Ernst and Young along with their volunteers, helped to make much needed major repairs to two Unity Care groups homes for foster boys in San Jose.

Check out Ernst & Young Volunteers at Work

Ernst and Young volunteers helped beautify one home located on Loomis Drive, which houses six boys ages 16-17.  Volunteers painted the interior and exterior, installed a new dishwasher, added a new electronic stop top, decorated the landscape by planting some greens, added new cement and fixed up the backyard.

While Intel spent several extra days at a home located on McVay Ave for boys ages 12-16.  Intel went above and beyond the call of duty by installing a whole new kitchen, which included kitchen cabinets, a new stove, dishwasher, and sink.  Additionally, volunteers painted the house's interior and exterior, installed a handrail in the backyard and reinforced the backyard hillside.

We simply cannot thank RTSV, Intel and Ernst and Young for their tremendous support, which will allow Unity Care to continue to provide a safe, secure and positive place our youth can call home.

A Unity Care Foster Youth Writes about "Life as a Foster Child"

An emancipated foster youth from Unity Care's RISE program, writes an extremely touching and inspirational article about his difficult experience growing up in the Foster Care system.

With positive encouragement and assistance from RISE coordinator Maggie Wong, the young man had the courage to write and submit a candid article to Silicon Valley' De-Bug.

He writes, "I felt lonely and isolated from all my friends because I was different.  I had never gotten the courageous to tell my friends that I was a foster child.  I was scared of discrimination and feared that I would get hated on.  With not many friends, I became a loner.  After I ran into some trouble, I was sent San Jose, even more isolated from my friends.  But it was there where I turned my life around."
