Happy New Year!
With the New Year comes new resolutions. Many of you are probably thinking about making a resolution to remove some old bad habits, maintain a healthier lifestyle, etc. But have you thought about helping to make a difference in the community? Consider a resolution that will help make a positive difference in the lives of our most vulnerable and valuable resource, our youth. You can help change a youth's life today by making a quick charitable donation towards Unity Care through our Birdies for Charity Fundraising Campaign. To learn more and to make a quick donation please read below. I thank you in advance for making an important contribution that will make a life changing impact on our young people's future and livelihood.
Unity Care’s level 11 program in San Jose is accepting referrals for males and females age 11-17. Unity Care also has openings in our Transitional Housing Program ages 18-24. Please contact Neil Liebert, our Youth Services Specialist at (408) 971-9822 if you would like to inquire about upcoming available beds in these or any other Unity Care program. When faxing youth information, please send to Neil's secure fax line at (408) 971-2255.
Best wishes,
André Chapman

Since 1993 Unity Care Group has continued to provide vital educational and social programs to enrich the lives of at-risk youth. We have served over 900 youth and their families in a variety of culturally competent residential, mental health, and community based programs. However, as County budget cuts continue to rise, Unity Care is working hard to continue providing a full range of services to Foster Youth by participating in the Birdies for Charity Fundraising program.
Unity Care will be here to work against the numerous odds stacked against Foster Youth who will be/or who are currently emancipated from the foster car system at 18 years of age.
According to California's statistics for emancipated Foster Care Youth:
More than 54% of youth who age-out of Foster Care do so each year without a high school diploma
African American's make up 7% of California's child population but account for 32% of children in Foster Care
For every one African American & Latino youth that goes to College - 3 - 4 go to prison
70% of San Quentin inmates grew up in Foster Care
Only 3% of Foster Care Youth go on to a 4-Year College
Two years after leaving foster care, less than half had jobs and only 40% had held a job for a least one year.
These alarming statistics demonstrate a clear need for Unity Care's culturally appropriate positive youth programs and services.
I urge you to support our efforts to create healthier communities by making a pledge per birdie made hosted throughout the 2008 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am annual golf tournament Feb 7-10 or you can make a one time flat donation.
Make a quick donation online or by printing and filling out the pledge form by Friday, January 18, 2008.
You may fax your pledge forms to Linda Vu, our Communications and Development Specialist at (408) 971-9820.

Santa's Helper Donation Program a Success!
The Santa's Helper Donation Drive successfully received an outpouring of support this past Holiday Season helping to make our youth's Holiday Season a truly fantastic one.
There are countless heartwarming stories about each youth's magical holiday season, however, for one particular family this Holiday Season will not be forgotten. With the help of our Wraparound team, a fifteen year old teenage boy and his family, were able to celebrate Christmas for the very first time. When our team asked the teen what gifts he wished to receive for Christmas, the boy unselfishly asked for basic household supplies, such as pillows, blankets, sheets and a microwave for his family. The boy stated that this was the best Christmas he had ever had.
Special Thank You
Special thanks to Patchen California Tree Farms, 100 Black Men of Silicon Valley, Higher Ground's Second Annual Holiday Fundraiser and many private donors, who generously opened their hearts and their wallets to brighten our youth's Holiday Season. We simply cannot thank you enough for helping to make our youth's Holiday Season a very warm, joyous and memorable one.
