Pink Therapy News Keeping YOU in the Frame
December 2009

Greetings!
|
Dear Colleagues
This will be our last Pink Therapy News of the year and I'm not sure where the year went.
It's not been an easy one for many of us and I am hoping that 2010 will be better and brighter.
We're in the process of growing the organisation from the virtual one man band it has been for the past decade into a more secure and dynamic organisation right in the middle of a recession! "Hey Ho! " As a certain obese gentleman dressed in red might say!
Thanks for your continued interest and support and we hope to see many of you on our training events in the forthcoming year.
Oh, and in case you weren't aware today is World AIDS Day, so if you see someone collecting, remember the pandemic hasn't gone away and here at home too there are still people in need of help. So why not wear one of those cute little red 'Hollywood Badges' and throw a couple of quid in a collecting box!

Introduction to Psychosexual Therapy Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th February 2010
|
Now in it's fifth year, this two day workshop provides an introduction to some of the key issues in working therapeutically with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender clients with psychosexual concerns, as well as clients involved in Kink/BDSM practices.
The workshop will cover current models of sexual response, the classification of sexual difficulties and a brief review of the literature and then explore some of the implicit assumptions in these hetero-normative models.
By widening our understanding of sex, sexuality and sexual difficulties we will give workshop participants an opportunity to explore some of the multiple contexts (sexuality, gender, age, ethnicity, culture, religion etc) that shape both clinicians and clients views of sexual difficulties and diverse sexual practices. We will then move on to interactive exercises with the aim of helping participants develop practical skills in assessment and therapeutic interventions with individual clients and couples.
We hope that by the end of the two days, participants will feel a greater sense of confidence in incorporating discussions of sex and sexual functioning into their general clinical work and/or developing their psychosexual therapy.

NAZ Project Free counselling for women and men aged 18+ from Black and Minority Ethnic communities
|
There is an increasing focus on mental well-being in Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities. The Department of Health's Delivering Race Equality (DRE) in Mental Health Care (2005) really highlighted the improvements needed for mental health services to meet the needs of BME groups more effectively. Many BME people do not engage with mental health services at the onset of a mental distress.
So this is a great time to set up a counselling service with such a unique focus: working with BME clients to understand how their anxiety, stress, feelings of depression, isolation, addictions and self harming behaviour may be linked to sex and sexual relationships. We know many of our clients felt they had nowhere to go to talk about how sex is affecting their mental health, due to family pressure, shame, guilt, or cultural and religious beliefs.
The service which is currently open from Monday to Friday and operates from NPL's headquarters in Hammersmith provides individuals with a safe space to discuss issues around their sexual health and how these may be causing their emotional distress.
