Introduction to Therapeutic Groups 31 Jan & 1 Feb 2009
|
We've had a lot of requests to help therapists prepare to run therapy groups and therapeutic group work for sexual minorities. We're fortunate to have Charles Neal and Tim Foskett who between them have decades of experience of running such groups. This weekend course is a unique opportunity to study with two of the countries most experienced gay therapy group workers.
The focus is on participants developing their own skills and interests in facilitating groups and using the opportunities provided in group work to support therapeutic growth.
The programme focuses on planning groups, facilitator styles, co-facilitating, group work exercises and working with diversity.
The workshop offers an opportunity to participate in 'live' mini-groups with feedback and to initiate peer support. We plan a follow up group later in the year to develop the work arising from this introductory weekend.

Essentials of Sexual Minority Therapy 17 & 18 Jan, 21 Feb, 21 Mar, 18 Apr 2009
|
Do you offer counselling or psychotherapy to lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender clients?
Are you confident that you have had sufficient knowledge and training to work competently with sexual minority clients?
Would you be interested in updating your knowledge and have an opportunity to work on your values, belief and attitudes in this area?
We offer a five day training in the Essentials of Sexual Minority Therapy.
Some quotes from people who have taken this course: "It was really inspiring, challenging and very very warm. Full of new concepts and novel ideas." "This
is the first training course I've attended in a long time where I
really learnt something new. An extremely well organised course with a
great deal of supporting material. The experiential learning was
particularly helpful."
"An excellent, well prepared and
presented course concerning essential aspects of this important
subject. Informative, engaging, thought provoking and professional."
"Very useful. High
standard and have provoked much further thought and possibilities to
explore. I feel I have learnt a huge amount."
"In the last twenty years of my career in teaching one of my main
duties has been to source, to evaluate and to propagate CPD for
colleagues. It is always a pleasure to see first class material
being presented by genuine experts in a way that is considered and
sensitive to the needs of the group."

Transgender Issues Saturday 24 January 2009
|
This workshop will give some basic information about trans as well as up-to-date research. It will examine a variety of trans practices, such as transsexualism with physical body modification; cross dressing; gender queer and gender variant presentations and identities; and the mainstream culture's 'playing' with gender and gender constructions. The workshop will challenge common misconceptions around trans, while encouraging participants to reflect on their own beliefs and understandings. Attendees will consider various case-studies to think about how they might work with trans clients, including those whose identity/practice is unrelated to their presenting problem as well as those who are concerned about their identity/practice. Relationships between trans and suicide and/or self-harming practices will also be explored.

Therapy Group for Gay/Bi Men
|
Pink Therapy Associate, Tim Foskett, has two spaces in his therapy group for gay/bi men which meets near Finsbury Park fortnightly on Thursday evenings. The therapy group is for men who want to work longer-term in a group with other gay/bi men. The agenda for the group is open, and the themes explored often include: relationships, intimacy, support, work issues, family issues, coming out, communication and social skills, and the meaning of life! Tim is an accredited individual and group psychotherapist. He is a founder and director of Loving Men ( www.lovingmen.org), and devised and led the PACE groupwork programme for gay and bi men from 1995 to 2008. He says: "Therapy in a group is a learning laboratory for relationships. The process you go through is a rich source of learning about yourself, and how you relate to others. This experience, and the skills you practise along the way, helps you develop authentic and intimate relationships in other parts of your life. Having an ongoing space in your life with peers who share similar challenges and experiences is one of the most effective support and development opportunities that i know of." To talk with Tim about joining the group call 020 8292 0984 or email tim.foskett@pinktherapy.com. More information is available on www.timfosketttherapy.co.uk

GIRES Website
|
You may wish to know about some recent additions to the website of the Gender Identity Research and Education Society (GIRES).
Transphobic Bullying in Schools: The British Home Office has commissioned GIRES to develop a toolkit for schools to use in combating transphobic bullying and provided a link to it from the Crime Reduction section of its own website. GIRES has consulted widely in preparing this material and has already incorporated most of the good suggestions generated by that process into the current version of the document. The consultation process is ongoing and GIRES will be very happy to receive further suggestions for improving the material. There are currently two versions of the toolkit. The first is designed for easy internet navigability and contains hyperlinks to other material within the toolkit and located externally. The second is an easy to print version. Like all GIRES material, the toolkit is subject to the charity's copyright policy (see here). However, schools, as well as other organisations, are specifically permitted to use it, in whole or in part, for internal discussion and teaching. Both versions may be accessed here
Prevalence and Growth of Gender Variance in the UK: GIRES is preparing a paper on this topic for publication in a peer reviewed journal. So far, it has published the abstract and also presented its main findings at the LGBT Health Summit in Bristol, on 4 September 2008. This material is on view here
Information about the Gender Recognition Panel: GIRES is keeping track of the rate at which the Panel is issuing Gender Recognition Certificates and the likely time that applicants (including those who have been required to reapply) will have to wait for a decision. This data, together with other information about the Panel is on view here

How to See Gender - with Persia West Monday, December 1st, 7-9pm
|
Persia West brings a unique insight to the perception of gender. To see the wood, not just the trees, you need perspective. Persia is a transgender woman who has an outside view of both genders and how they are created, she has worked as a trainer and coach for more than 25 years, and she has practised meditation and spiritual contemplation for at least 35 years. It's taken that long and all manner of experience to get How to See Gender straight and clear.
For background on all of this click on eyeongender.squarespace.com which has a link to a great article in the Guardian, linking testosterone to the making and breaking of fortunes in the City, before the chaos hit.
The cost is £20, cash on the night. Receipts given. Invoices for three or more only. Reservations essential as space is limited.

GAYWISE FESTIVAL November 2008
|
Please note forthcoming GFest - gayWise LGBT Arts Festival next month: The Deputy Mayor, Richard Barnes, says in support of GFest: "Now in its second year, GFest provides important opportunities for the capital's LGBT and queer-identified artists, performers and filmmakers - as well as others from across the globe - to showcase their work. It is fitting that GFest takes place in the capital. London has the largest, most diverse community in Europe, and already hosts a series of high-profile LGBT events, including Pride, the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and LGBT History Month. The festival also encourages London's theatres and museums to review their programmes and make them more attractive to LGBT Londoners - this is important in a city where at least 10% of the population is gay and lesbian."

Pink Therapy Yahoo Group
|
Pink Therapy recently established a Yahoo Group on the request of some of our readers. You are all welcome to join by going to:
groups.yahoo.com/subscribe/pinktherapy
Apparently Yahoo have just introduced new terms for people using their services and we're expected to create an updated profile about ourselves. They're moving in the direction of Facebook if seems. As far as I understand it, you can still provide some very basic information
A direct link to log-in and create this new profile for existing group members is here: profiles.yahoo.com/settings/
Our group only has a few members and no-one's posted anything as yet, but we're hoping this will be a useful resource to stimulate debate and discussion. Dominic has uploaded some useful documents in the 'Files' section as resources to tempt you in!

Thanks for your interest and attention and please do keep us informed of relevant events in your area.
