Greetings!
Dominic DaviesSeptember is here already, I hope that most of you have managed to get a holiday to recharge your batteries.

There have been some interesting developments in this past month as you'll read below.

Thanks to those of you who have renewed your membership to the Directory (almost everyone did)!  Your continued support helps provide a vital choice for clients around the UK who  want to find a supportive and non-pathologising therapist.
Essentials in Sexual Minority Therapy Course
Commencing 4 October
imageThis five-day course (it was previously four days but we have so much material to cover) still has a few places for remaining.  If you're considering applying, please email to check there is still room.
Full details of the course here.
Supervision of Sexual Minority Therapy
Advanced Workshops from 11th October
rainbow parade We're holding a series of small one-day workshops for clinical supervisors who want to understand more about what's different in supervising therapists working with gender and sexual minority clients.  This may be where the supervisor and therapist is heterosexual or where the supervisor is heterosexual and the therapist and client identify as a gender or sexual minority.  We could also look at LGBT supervisors supervising heterosexuals working with LGBT clients.

There are many differences and similarities and this workshop aims to raise some key issues as well as have space for the participants to bring their own practice issues.  The size of the groups are limited to around six participants to allow time for everyone.  The facilitators are experienced supervisors with various theoretical orientations.  More info download this flyer
Bursary for 'Gender Variant' Therapists -
Essentials in Sexual Minority Therapy Oct- December 2008
image
We're also offering a bursary for a practicing therapist who identifies as gender variant (intersex, transgender, transsexual, cross dresser, gender queer etc) or we may consider someone who has extensive personal and professional experience of working with this group to attend the Essentials in Sexual Minority Therapy programme.  We are wanting to continue to build bridges between the LGB and TIQ communities and recognise that many people who identify as intersex or trans also experience same sex attractions and such therapists may not have had any specific training at working with these issues.

We recognise that there are differences between sexual and gender minorities and hope by offering a bursary we might enable a gender variant therapist to learn more about gender and sexual minority therapy as well as to share their own experiences of this area of work.

The bursary is worth a 50% reduction in course fees (therefore you'd only pay 225).  Applications in writing to Dominic by 10 September, detailing your training and experience.
Working with Older LGBT People

David Richards is offering a workshop on working with older LGBT clients.  David has considerable experience in this area and we are delighted to be addressing some of the specific issues faced by this often disenfranchised and discriminated group.

Website Updated

Colleagues on PCThe Pink Therapy resources sections have been massively revised and updated.  We're grateful to Stephan Dais who for the last year has volunteered to read and summarise almost all the self-help texts and even some other books aimed at therapists.  This is now a very valuable resource if you want to recommend any bibliotherapy to clients or just for them to check out.

We've also been able to update the Weblinkssection based on some voluntary work by Wayne Johnson.

If you're interested in voluntary work with Pink Therapy, feel free to get in touch. Unfortunately we're not at this stage able to offer clinical placements and so the work is more administrative and research based.
Recent Trans Research

booksThere are two recent reports of interest to those working with Trans clients.  The first is the American Psychological Association's Task Force Report on Gender Identity and Gender Variance  reporting on their guidelines.  This is a significant report and appears to be very helpful.  The second is an NHS Audit review of Trans peoples experiences of seeking help. The Patient Satisfaction Survey paints a pretty grim and sorry picture of trans user experiences especially within the NHS. Whilst it's not all bad there are plenty of things that need changing and the report makes recommendations.

Survey Launched on Women's Experience of Homophobia or Transphobia

Room 2Of the homopobic hate crime incidents reported to the Police, women are 7 times less likely to report homophobic violence to the police even though it is apparent through the LGBT community that actual incidents between male and female are at a similar level. Why  then are women not reporting these incidents?
The Metropolitan Police Service are working hard to address homophobic or transphobic abuse carried out towards women. Susan Paterson from the Diversity and Citizen Directorate of the MPS  explains that it is vital to gain a better understanding of women's  experience of homophobia or transphobia which is why they have commissioned  the market research company Stormbreak Research and Consultancy who use gay  fieldworkers and understand the LGBT community to implement a survey within  London which investigates womens' experiences of homophobia and transphobia.
This will take place all over the Capital in both scene and non scene locations. This survey is also being supported by Gaydargirls.com. If you are out and about in London and are asked to spend a couple of minutes filling in the details, please do it.

PLEASE SEND COMPLETED SURVEYS TO:
[email protected] or Susan Paterson at 11th  Floor Empress State Building, Lillie Road, London SW6 1TR.
Thanks for your interest and attention and please do keep us informed of relevant events in your area.
