Greetings!
|
Well here we are in the middle of the year, and still so much to do! In this past month, I've presented a workshop on the Supervision of Sexual Minority Therapy at the UKCP Supervision Conference which was very well received and we've now entered into negotiations regarding a joint training venture between UKCP and Pink Therapy. I've also co-facilitated a sell-out workshop on Understanding Sexual Compulsivity in Gay and Bisexual Men with my clinical associate Tim Foskett. Our new one-year Certificate in Sexual Minority Therapy will commence in October, and it looks likely the course will be full.
We've also recruited a new Clinical Associate - Havva Mustafa to join the team. We're delighted to have her onboard and believe she will bring some much needed experience and expertise to the organisation. Her new associates profile will be up shortly (once she returns from Annual Leave).
I wanted to let you know that the mentoring project that Charles Neal and I are doing called Thinking it Over (which is a series of ongoing groups - either facilitated by Charles or myself is underway. Charles' group is looking like it is full, but I still have spaces in mine. If you are interested in having some specific CPD to explore the development of your work with gender and sexual minority clients please click on this link to download a flyer with more information.
The group will be a mixture of some guided reading and discussion as well as a chance of members to bring issues of concern or areas for development. |
Supervision of SMT various dates commencing 11 October
|
We will again be running a series of one-day workshops for clinical supervisors who want to understand more about the differences and similarities in supervising therapy with gender and sexual minority clients. These advanced training workshops are run by highly experienced supervisors from our clinical associates group. Click here for more information

Sexual Minority Therapy Resources |
We just want to remind you that we have a hidden area of our website with an enormous amount of resources aimed at therapists working with gender and sexual minority clients. There are PDF's of leaflets and guides for LGBT clients as well as reports into LGBT mental health etc. There are even a few training exercises for those of you working as counsellor trainers.
You may download these resources, but please maintain the copyright and attributions to the original authors.
We update this part of the website regularly and would encourage you to bookmark it and return regularly. We've recently added more trans resources and a link to a Radio 4 programme on Lesbian Domestic Violence. The link to the Resources is here.

Prescription For Change Lesbian and bisexual women's health check 2008
|
Damning inequalities revealed in first major lesbian health studySignificantly more self-harm and suicide than in wider female population Higher levels of drug use and heavy drinking. Half Britain's 1.8m lesbians still report a recent negative NHS experience The first major survey ever conducted into lesbian and bisexual women's health in Britain reveals deeply disturbing levels of self-harm, substance abuse and exclusion from routine testing for cervical cancer. Prescription for Change, a survey of 6,000 lesbian and bisexual respondents, suggests that health services are failing to identify specific healthcare needs among Britain's 1.8 million lesbian population. They are also failing to address specific mental health needs that many women still experience as a result of discrimination. The survey, conducted by Stonewall is the biggest of its kind ever conducted outside America, provides unique new statistics on the mental health, drinking and drug use of lesbian and bisexual women in Britain in 2008: One in five lesbian and bisexual women have deliberately harmed themselves in the last year, compared to 0.4 per cent of the general population. Young lesbian and bisexual women are ten times more likely to have self-harmed compared to others - half of women under 20 have self-harmed compared to one in fifteen of teenagers generally.Lesbian and bisexual women under 20 are eight times more likely to have attempted to take their life than teenagers generally.Lesbian and bisexual women are five times more likely to have taken drugs than women generally. Forty per cent drink three times a week compared to a quarter of women in general. The report includes ten key recommendations for the NHS to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery for lesbian and bisexual patients. 'We trust that ministers will take this report seriously and start pushing service providers across the NHS to address some of the very stark evidence of differential service delivery revealed by this research,' said Ben Summerskill.
