Pink Therapy Newsletter Keeping YOU in the frame!
December 2005

Greetings!

A somewhat briefer newsletter this month, but perhaps time to welcome many of the new therapists who joined the Directory during the past couple of months as a result of a recruitment drive to try to balance out the London-centred nature of the Directory.

We really are delighted that the Directory is now much more relevant to people living outside the capital and we hope to encourage more sexuality affirmative therapists to join so that sexual minority clients living outside of London can find someone safe and skilled to work with.

In this issue:
  • Seasons Greetings?
  • Working with Gay Men having Unprotected Sex?
  • Working with Transgender and Intersex Clients
  • LGBT Mental Health Resources NIMHE Resources
  • Women Loving Women: Creativity & Imagination Workshop
  • Volunteer Counsellors (Gay Men’s Sexual Health)

  • Working with Gay Men having Unprotected Sex?
    Shernoff BB image

There is still some space on Michael Shernoff's workshop on Friday 13th January which will explore some of the reasons behind the increase in gay men having unprotected anal sex and explore how using harm reduction strategies, including Motivation Enhancement Therapy (a variation of Motivational Interviewing) can be an effective way to help clients explore their behaviour.

Incidentally, Michael has just had a book published by Routledge on this subject and we have managed to negotiate a good discount on selling the book at the workshop. If you are unable to come to the workshop, but still interested in getting hold of a copy of the book email us ASAP and we can give you a 20% discount on the cover price of 17.99 (14.40 plus P&P).

Working with Transgender and Intersex Clients

We also want to encourage readers to attend the workshop running the following day on Saturday 14th January, exploring working with transgender and intersex clients.

Increasingly feeling alienated by some of the specialist gender identity clinics around the country, many clients with gender identity issues are turning to independent practitioners for a space to consider all their options in a way which isn't tied into their access to treament options. Independent gender therapy can be a useful precursor to engaging with the NHS procedures

Further more, understanding more about the social context of transgender and intersex people will enable therapists to offer a more informed and skilled response.

If you would like to feel more confident in this area of work, you will find this one day workshop of great value.

LGBT Mental Health Resources NIMHE Resources
    NIMHE logo

NIMHE's Knowledge Community includes an impressive section on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Mental Health which gives links to research, resources, websites, groups, policies, and news related to LGBT people and mental health, general health, hate crime, education, older LGBTs, young LGBTs, etc.

It is being developed, so if you are aware of any useful resources to add, please contact Jan Bridget: [email protected]. Please feel free to publicise this useful resource as widely as possible.

Women Loving Women: Creativity & Imagination Workshop
    LMU logo

The experiences of women who love women have been subject to misrepresentation and suppression in social context, history, psychotherapies and the arts. Forces of oppression that silence and negate, and an absence of 'healthy' social mirroring, generate particular psychological and social conflicts for women who are exploring or living a lesbian self-identity. For many lesbian women it can be difficult to fully and publicly express their subjectivity, to put their stories at the centre rather than the margins, and to inhabit power and authority with confidence, creativity and a sense of entitlement in the face of a relentless tide of negative forces. This day will provide an opportunity to explore your relationship with these and other issues through the creative process.

It is open to women who identify as (or with the term) lesbian and who are working in the helping professions / counselling / psychotherapy.

Date: Saturday 18 February 2006, 9.15am-3.00pm Workshop Facilitator: Paula Collens, MA, UKCP reg. Telephone: 020 7133 2093 for application form or E.mail: [email protected]

    Seasons Greetings?
    autumn

As we face the end of the year, I am aware of the extra stresses and strains that are placed on us all: the wintry weather, the pressure of Christmas and working with clients as they prepare for the break.

I thought it would be good to offer a meditative seasonal image for you! Each month, we will try to feature a new image, hopefully something you will enjoy to reflect upon.

Can I thank you all for your interest and support in Pink Therapy over the past year and I hope you have found these monthly newsletters of interest in your work with sexual minority clients.

I hope that we will get the chance to meet up at next year's Pink Therapy Conference: Intimate Affairs on the 16-17 June 2006.

    With best wishes, Dominic Davies

P.S. The Office will be closed on between 21st Dec and 2nd Jan inclusive. We will reopen on Tuesday 3rd January 2006. Emails may be dealt with during that period, post will not!
