Greetings!
Even though this is our August newsletter, written at
a time when therapists traditionally take their
vacations, we still have plenty of news for you.
Perhaps a sign that we haven't gone on holiday
ourselves yet!
ICE Campaign |
 |
This is a bright idea from East Anglian Ambulance
NHS Trust. In the case of an emergency would
the
police or ambulance service know who to contact?
Simply type ICE plus a contact name and
number into
your mobile and help the emergency services to help
you in the event that you are involved in an
accident and can't speak for yourself.

Working with Transgender and Intersex Clients? |
|
We're aware that many of you are now seeing
transgender and intersex clients, or people
exploring their gender identity. We are also aware
that you may have had little opportunity to access
training and support for this work and so we wanted
to offer a few suggestions of specialist resources.
The Harry Benjamin International Gender
Dysphoria
Association, Inc. (HBIGDA) is a professional
organization devoted to the understanding and
treatment of gender identity disorders. It has
approximately 350 members from around the world, in
the fields such as psychiatry, endocrinology,
surgery, psychology, sexology, counselling,
sociology, and law.
HBIGDA produces the Standards of Care - the
official guidelines, or treatment protocol followed by
most specialist gender
clinics, and downloadable from their website (URL at
the foot of this article).
HBIGDA is also on a membership drive and members
get a subscription to the International Journal of
Transgenderism as well as other useful resources
The largest UK campaigning body is Press for
Change
and in addition to a large and helpful website:
http://www.pfc.org.uk/ they have a newslist which
we
would say is essential reading for anyone
involved
in working with transgender clients.
The Gender Identity Research and Education
Service (GIRES)
is a UK based organisation which has extensive
information about the issue, much of it downloadable
as PDF files: http://www.gires.org.uk/
We at Pink Therapy have also been developing a body
of expertise. Dominic Davies is a full member of
HBIGDA and GIRES and has been developing in
conjunction with Sarah Astin, a transgender
colleague, some training workshops for local
authority staff. Dominic has also been involved in
co-training with Dr Glyn Hudson-Allez Training
Offficer of British Association of Sex and
Relationship Therapists (BASRT)
training on a one-day workshop for counsellors and
sex therapists. This day has been run twice now and
was full both times. A third workshop is planned
for 2006.
Pink Therapy has also invited Tina
Livingstone a
therapist with fifteen years experience of working
with transgender clients, to run a one day workshop
on Saturday 14th January 2006 for
counsellors and therapists wishing to improve their
knowledge and skills in working
with transgender and intersex issues. More
