  • Two Year Specialist Training in Sexual Minority Therapy

We are pleased to announce a 2 year Post Qualifying Clinical Studies In Sexual Minority Therapy programme, aimed at the increasing number of counsellors and therapists who seek to specialise in working with sexual minority clients.

Four Days 'Essential' Training for ALL

We have also developed a four-day Essentials in Sexual Minority Therapy course, which forms the core part of the 2 year Post Qualifying course. The course is aimed at all therapists working with sexual minority clients

This covers the latest theory and best practice in working with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender clients. It really is Essential!

    Professional Development Workshops

We are also happy to announce our 2004/2005 Professional Development Workshops - we have focussed this year, especially on sex, drugs and relationships. This is a result of requests from YOU.

Our Professional Workshops also form part of the Post Qualifying course and we are delighted to be able to have on board some new Training Associates helping to deliver these workshops.

    Queer Analysis Conference

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy has traditionally had a difficult relationship with homosexuality. There certainly has been quite a bit of damage caused to lesbians and gay men by well meaning analytically oriented therapists who have sought to cure them of their 'perversion' or 'neurosis.'

Yet, over the past twenty years new ideas have emerged, some from feminism, others within academia and Queer Theory and some from outside of these domains.

Increasingly lesbian and gay therapists have taken to revising the theory and there is much to offer sexual minority clients from an analytic tradition.

    External Events

"IF......" Boarding school has a huge impact, for good or ill. The experience is often especially traumatic if we're gay and can affect us as adults many years later. We may learn to fit in, to function well at a surface social level, but at what cost? This one-day workshop looks at integrating the experience, so that we're less likely to play victim to a difficult past. There are two workshop dates planned at present: Sunday 25 July 10.30 am - 4 pm and Sunday 26 September 10.30 am - 4 pm. The cost per workshop is £48 and you are encouraged to attend both if you wish, though this is not a requirement. For further information see www.marcusg ottlieb.com email contact@marcusgottlieb.com

Britain's First Professional Qualification Training in Sexual Minority Therapy

It is widely acknowledged by most experienced therapists working with sexual minority clients that their initial training programmes offered them very little in the way of specific training in working with sexual minority clients.

They may have had some time exploring anti-oppressive practice and which explored their attitudes, but clinical issues and lesbian and gay psychology are rarely ever covered by most UK counselling and psychotherapy training programmes.

We are delighted to be able to help change that. Our new two year post qualifying clinical studies programme in working with sexual minority clients provides specialist training to an advanced level for people who are already qualified as counsellors, psychotherapists and psychologists. It is aimed at people who are interested in specialising in working with sexual minority clients. It is flexible enough to be able to be of use to both experienced practitioners who want a structured opportunity to extend their knowledge and skills as well as recently qualified therapists beginning to work in this field. This training is a UK first, and we are very excited to be able to offer it.
