Meals Tax Meeting with the Mayor
Metro South Chamber of Commerce, 60 School Street, Brockton

Meeting to discuss the proposed tax increase on patrons of Brockton restaurants. Effective October 1, municipalities will have the authority to impose a new, local meals tax of 0.75% on restaurant meals in addition to the 6.25% sales tax already instituted. The additional revenue collected from this tax will go to the city or town that imposes it. This meeting is to gauge the response of restaurant owners in Brockton. Mayor James Harrington will cohost this meeting.

Meet business people from the Attleboro, Cranberry County, Metro South, New Bedford, Fall River, North Attleboro, Tri-Town, Plymouth and Taunton Chambers of Commerce. Last year's networking event brought together a crowd of nearly 300 business professionals and entrepreneurs. This is a great opportunity to meet members from surrounding chambers.

Good Samaritan Medical Center will partner with the Psi Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to present a "Breast Cancer Awareness Program" in an evening designed to bring greater awareness to all area women regarding breast health. 6-7 p.m. in the Moakley Conference Room on the ground level of the Medical Center, 235 N. Saturday, October 24: Ian Irving Third Annual Bone Marrow Registration Drive at Moreau Hall Elementary School Cafeteria, rt. 138, in Easton from 10am-2pm. More than 35,000 patients per year, many of them children, are diagnosed with diseases treatable by a marrow or stem cell transplant.  These diseases include leukemia, lymphoma and other cancers and genetic diseases. Our first drive was a success! Colleen Corona, Chairwoman of the Easton Board of Selectmen, joined the bone marrow registry in 2007 and was a match for a 6 year old little girl.  We would like to find more perfect matches! Sunday October 25: Brockton Symphony Orchestra begins its 62nd year, "Fire and Ice", with the music of Sibelius and Grieg. Conductor James Orient will be joined by Kristhyan Benitez, exciting young Venezuelan pianist, in a performance of the piano concerto by Edward Grieg.  Music by Jean Sibelius, Finlandia and The Second Symphony, will complete the program.  Concert will take place at the West Middle School, West St. Brockton at 3:00 P.M. on October 25, 2009.  Tickets prices are:  Adults $20, seniors and students $15. Tuesday, October 27: Good Samaritan Medical Center will launch a new outreach program this month designed to be "one-stop shopping" for cholesterol, blood sugar (glucose), body mass and blood pressure screenings. The first free screening will be held on October 27, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Senior Center, 10 Father Kenney Way. The goal is to make these screenings accessible to people in the community with potential health issues. No insurance is necessary to undergo the screening. Call 1-800-488-5959 to register.

Sunday, November 1: from 6-7:30 Brockton Interfaith Community will be hosting the last of 9 national meetings with the Federal Reserve at St Patrick's Church, 335 Main St, Brockton. It is our hope to bring to the Federal Reserve and our Legislators the sense of Brockton, the sense of the crisis here in MA, and our suggestions of what needs to be done. We will be addressing the lack of modifications and use of President Obama's HAMP plan as well as the need for all banks and mortgage companies to be covered by the Community Reinvestment Act. Saturday, November 7: The Brockton Historical Society in collaboration with the Cape Verde Association, present Voyages from Cape Verde to Brockton and surrounding areas. 2-5pm at the Brockton Public Library Lingos Room. This is the first in an ongoing series to get to know, respect and appreciate our neighbors' talents and gifts.  Dr. Aminah Pilgrim, historian and professor at UMass, Boston and current president of the Cape Verdean Association along with Dr. Joao Rosa, Professor at UMass, Dartmouth will present.  There will also be songs, poetry, art and light refreshments.
