"To Everything a Season"

tomatoes from The Farm at Rockledge GardensDear Gardening Bug,

Yesterday was one of those bittersweet days for me. As Diana and I walked through The Farm, she suggested that it was time to finish harvesting the tomatoes that are growing under shade, and start cleaning out those hydroponic towers. The recent rains have been causing issues with the tomato plants; although they still had some beautiful growth, baby tomatoes, and even a few blossoms, at this stage it's best just to call it a season for those tomatoes. (Though we do still have a later crop planted in full sun that will keep producing for a few weeks.)

I had flashbacks to when we first sowed the seeds in January and then the weeks and months following as we watched and nurtured and got so excited about the beautiful crops. One of my favorite songs from my youth kept coming to mind: "Turn, Turn, Turn" by the Byrds.

We are so grateful for a good first season at The Farm, and we thank you for your encouragement and support! We're now eagerly planning the fall season, and we look forward to the great produce that flourishes in the season moving from hot to cool.

Seasonal Rain!

We are actually happy to have the rains, and it looks like we're now settling in to our more common weather pattern for summer in Florida, with regular afternoon thunderstorms and showers. For the most part, nature is responding well to these waterings, and our landscapes are looking lush. The proof: this week's "garden treasures."

Be sure to adjust your irrigation with these regular rains. And remember, we have another rain barrel workshop planned for July 14. Let's not waste this valuable natural resource.

This Week's Seminar: "Food for Life"

We are honored to have Susie Fricker, a Food for Life instructor, teaching a class on how foods fight cancer. The will run from 2 to 4 pm this Saturday; the cost is $5. Explore how a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, grains, and legumes can help you fight cancer or increase your chance of survival. Please reserve your space in this class by calling Susie at 321-652-0563. And here's her flyer with more information.

This Week at The Farm

As I mentioned, we're starting to streamline The Farm for the summer season. We still have a nice selection of tomatoes, peppers, (both sweet and hot), eggplant, and herbs. We are also expecting to produce okra through July. Feel free to stop by the Farm Market in the yellow building during our regular hours. And remember, mangoes are still available in the tent in our parking lot Wednesday through Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. These mangoes are fresh-picked from groves in Merritt Island, and they're summery-luscious!
