"Getting Healthy in the Garden"

garden at Huntington Place Dear Gardening Bug,

For the past several months one of our wonderful co-workers here, Dar, has been spending a lot of her spare time creating some beautiful gardens at a very special place. Dar's son suffered a stroke last year and is living at Huntington Place, a nursing facility here in Rockledge. Dar visits every day and takes him out to the beautiful courtyard to visit, read to him, and get to know the other residents.

Over the months, Dar has been recycling plants and garden accent pieces, and "repurposing" them in the garden at Huntington. Throughout the process, she has involved others at the facility to help them to see the garden as their own. She even planned some of the plantings so that one resident in a wheelchair can tend to them. She has truly transformed the courtyard into a place of beauty and healing.

Gardening is therapeutic is so many ways. It provides us with exercise and fresh air, and soothes us and satisfies our spirits with the beauty it provides. Gardens also can help to create community.

"Food Revolution Day" this Saturday

This coming Saturday from 10 am til noon, Rockledge Gardens will be hosting the Space Coast Food Revolution Day. The international event was created by Jamie Oliver, with the mission of raising awareness of healthy eating habits. The event here at Rockledge Gardens will feature local chefs presenting cooking demos (with samples, of course!), talks on nutrition, and exercise demonstrations. It's bound to be fun for the entire family.

Our farm stand will be open as usual (from 9 am til noon), and we will be supplementing our produce with some from another local farm, Pure Produce in Micco. In addition, we will feature citrus blossom honey from Space Coast Bees. We have such a variety of local, healthy options here in Brevard County! We'll also be offering tours of The Farm at 11 am and 1:30 pm. The tours require pre-registration, so call 636-7662 or email us to reserve your spot. Visit the Food Revolution Space Coast Facebook page for more details about this exciting event.

This Week at The Farm

Our okra blossoms are beautiful now, and they signal the coming of one of our favorite southern treats! We promise to harvest our okra while it's tender and delicious. Tomatoes are in full swing now, and we are excited to be harvesting them every day. There are many ways to fix and enjoy tomatoes, and they are SO good for you!
