"May Flowers"
May 2, 2012

Dear Gardening Bug,

display at Epcot Flower Festival Kevin and I had the opportunity to put in some volunteer hours this past Sunday, and we were greatly rewarded for it! Our state nursery association (FNGLA) has an exhibit at the Epcot Flower Festival and recruits their membership to staff the exhibit in 3-hour shifts. The reward is a back-stage entrance to the park and a chance to enjoy Epcot for the rest of the day.

The exhibit was called "Backyard Fun," and it featured some whimsical ways to decorate and enjoy your gardens. As usual, we were truly inspired by the wonderful use of flowers, trees, and shrubs throughout the entire park. One of my favorite displays, and certainly a very doable one for any of us, was a succulent wall made out of cinder blocks. This one was actually in the FNGLA exhibit and drew a great deal of interest from all of the guests.

I ran the battery down on my cell phone taking pictures that day ... thought you'd like to see some of the many treasures we found.

May is a Month for Flowers!

If we were to count the number of plants, trees, shrubs, and vines that bloom in the various months, I'm sure that May would hold the record for the most! Even succulents and cactus are blooming this time of year. Here are some of our own Rockledge Gardens treasures.

Below: Sunscape daisy, and (clockwise from top left) coneflower, mandevilla vine, justicia, and gomphrena.

water gardenSeminar This Saturday: Water Gardening

One of the most unique and beautiful category of flowers can be found in water gardens. Water lilies are vibrant and beautiful and are blooming profusely in these warmer months. This Saturday at 10 am, Charlie Chapman will present a seminar on water gardening. He'll discuss bog plants as well as water lilies and talk about the selection and care of the proper water plants for your water garden.

What to Do in Your Garden in May

It's just a great time to be out in the garden! Here are a few of the "chores" you can undertake this month.
  • As the days get longer and the sun gets more intense, consider replanting your container gardens with more heat-tolerant plants. You can also move your containers to partial shade to prolong the life of your spring flowers.
  • Apply corn gluten to control weed growth in your lawn and garden. Corn gluten provides a source of slow release nitrogen while preventing weed seeds from germinating.
  • When you dead-head your perennials, toss the seed heads into the flower bed. Many of these seeds will germinate, and these second-generation perennials are sturdier and well-acclimated to your garden.
Check our website for more May "to do's" in the garden.

lady bug eggsThis Week at The Farm

Our tomatoes are beginning to show color! We will have some available at the farm stand this weekend. We also have peppers, and some beautiful dwarf varieties of eggplant! Today Diana sowed some New Zealand spinach from seeds that we purchased from Suzanne at Funky Chicken Farms last week. Be watching for this great, heat-tolerant substitute for spinach in the coming months.

We are learning quite a bit about bugs these days at The Farm. Luckily, the good guys seems to be prevailing. We have a nice mix of lady bugs, parasitic wasps, bees, and assassin bugs populating the rows right now. We still haven't figured out how to control stink bugs and harlequin bugs, other than the old-fashioned pick-and-squish method!

We have been seeing a lot of lady bug eggs lately ... here's what they look like; be happy if you spot them in your own garden!
We wish you the very best in the merry month of May!

See you in the garden,
Theresa & Kevin
