"Spring Green" April 4, 2012
|
|
Dear Gardening Bug,
I think I have found a new favorite color. Not one you'll find in a box of crayons, or on a Pantone or Benjamin Moore color chart, but one that I'd call "spring green." It's the color of the fresh new leaves that emerge everywhere almost overnight this time of year. If you blink, you might miss it!
These days Kevin and I are dog-sitting my brother's chow, who requires good long walks twice daily. It's been during my morning walks with Zoro that I have noticed all the wonderful signs of spring. In Florida, the seasons can all blend into each other if we don't really take time to stop and observe. It's so worthwhile to slow down and get outside and look around!

Other Colors of Spring
Though it has felt more like summer this week (good for spring breakers, for sure), our temperatures are predicted to be more "normal" for this coming Easter weekend. Color abounds in every department here at Rockledge Gardens. Take a look at this week's "garden treasures" to see what I mean. Just a few of my favorites for this spring-into-summer season include caladiums, coleus, dianthus, iris, yellow elder, orchids, and of course, sunflowers!

Happy Hobbies
Did you catch the article in Sunday's Today paper about what people do to unwind? Gardening was mentioned more than once!
Making things is another outlet for many people. We are fortunate to have several local artisans in our area who create beautiful things for the garden. This past week three of them brought in their handiwork. Robert Cruickshank, from Beachside Patio Garden Accessories, makes potting benches, planters, and trellises out of red cedar, a native Florida wood that is resistant to rot and insect infestation and has a lovely grain and a pleasant fragrance.
Other local creations we are now featuring in our Garden Barn are garden-themed pottery, copper plant hangers, and hand-painted garden masks made from palm tree "boots."

This Week at The Farm
Spending time at The Farm is one of my own best stress relievers. Whether we're harvesting beans or greens, doing our integrated pest management, or just walking the rows checking the progress of the crops, I find it very relaxing!
We'll be harvesting the last of our radishes and lettuce this week (it's getting too hot), but there should be a nice selection of them at the farm stand this week. Our tomatoes and peppers are progressing very well, as are collards and eggplant. The farm stand will be open from 4 to 6 on Friday and from 9 till noon on Saturday. In addition, we will be giving tours of The Farm from 8:30 to 10 am on Saturday. Early morning is my favorite time at The Farm; we'll be happy to show you around!

Seminar This Saturday: Herbs
Cooking is another one of those great stress relievers, and you can combine gardening with cooking when you grow your own herbs. They taste SO much better too! Join us this Saturday at 10 am for our seminar on growing and using herbs.
We wish you and your family a very Happy Easter! We will be closed on Sunday to celebrate with our own families.
