Rockledge Gardens
"Tiny Treasures"
March 21, 2012

 Dear Gardening Bug,

These past few weeks it seems we've been invaded by wee ones here at Rockledge Gardens ... not the St. Patrick's Day leprechaun type, but the little-children type arriving in school buses! We have hosted several field trips recently and have been delighted to see the children's excitement about growing things, and to see gardening being added to the curriculum in many schools. Gardening is a great hands-on way for children to learn lessons in math and science, phys ed, and nutrition!

It's fun to see families get involved in gardening as well. Butterfly gardens and vegetable gardens are two popular family activities. Other fun ways to get children involved and excited about gardening are fairy gardens and terrariums, which provide wonderful opportunities for kids' creativity and imagination, and help children learn to care for living things.

Our growers have caught on to the miniature gardens craze and have started to grow great plants in tiny pots! These little treasures make it much easier to plan and plant fairy gardens and terrariums. We'll be happy to help you choose the right ones for your particular locations. We also have a nice selection of fairy furniture and accessories, and fairy garden boxes (complete with moss) that we built from naturally aged recycled wood.

Welcome, Spring!

While it has felt like Spring for several weeks now, the official start was just yesterday. Spring is our favorite time of year here, and brings us such a beautiful offering of flowering and tropical plants. Dormant trees are leafing out in their soft new green leaves, and the scent of citrus blossoms and jasmine is filling the air. It's a perfect time to be outdoors, and gardening "chores" are truly fun! If you haven't fed your trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns yet, now is the time. And pruning should be finished up this month too.

This Week at The Farm

We're seeing the signs of spring at The Farm as well. In just the past week or so, our sunflowers and many vegetable plants have doubled in size. Peppers and tomato plants are loaded with blossoms, and we're eagerly awaiting their first fruits. Green beans are in full production, as are our leafy vegetables. The farm stand is now open on Friday evenings from 4 to 6, and Saturday mornings from 9 to 12. Be sure to sign up for our weekly "Fresh from The Farm" e-mail if you would like to know what we're harvesting each week. Just email me at Theresa@rockledgegardens.com, and we'll make you a "Friend of the Farm."

Mustard Greens

One of our goals at The Farm is to provide a selection of different types and varieties of vegetables. We have planted more than a dozen varieties of tomatoes, and many types of peppers, both hot and sweet. We also planted both green wave and ruby streak mustard greens, which are beautiful plants packed with nutritional benefits. Eaten raw their flavor is strong/spicy, so they add a nice little kick when added to a salad. Cooked, their flavor is much milder. Here's how I cooked ruby streaks for my family last night: I sautéed scallions and garlic in olive oil, chopped up the greens and added them to the mix for just a few minutes, and then sprinkled it all with sea salt and ground pepper. It made a healthy, delicious (and easy!) side dish with great taste and texture. I'll be sharing a recipe for mustard/potato soup in Friday's "Friends of the Farm" email.

Happy Spring!
See you in the garden,
Theresa & Kevin
