SISTERS INFORMING SISTERS ABOUT TOPICS ON HIV/AIDS
A faith based 5 session program for African American women; developed by African American women that discusses dating, relationships, sex and
effective communication . We welcome all women of all races!
It's true: Knowledge is power. So the more you know about the HIV virus, the better you can impact the lives of those living with HIV/Aides and those that do not have the virus. Plus, new information about the HIV virus is being discovered all the time.
In some respects HIV and AIDS affect women in almost the same way they affect men. For example,
- Women of color (especially African American women) are the hardest hit.
- Younger women are more likely than older women to get HIV.
- AIDS is a common killer, second only to cancer and heart disease for women
Of these newly infected women, about 2 out of 3 are African-American. Most of these women got HIV from having unprotected sex with a man. In 2006, the rate of new HIV infection for black women was nearly 15 times as high as that of white women and nearly four times that of Latinos.
And, HIV/AIDS is a leading cause of death of African-American women in many age groups.
