October is Campaign for Justice Month!

The Campaign for Justice is a collaboration among the State Bar of California, LAAC, legal services programs, and private attorneys to raise awareness and funding for legal services. October

is Campaign for Justice month, and we are celebrating by helping to spread the word about the Campaign. We hope that you will join us!

Here are a few quick and easy ways that you and your program can get involved:

  • Join the Campaign by signing up here
  • Add The Campaign for Justice logo to your organization's website (click here to download)
  • Share your client stories, like the ones featured here

Some other ideas include:

  • Adding information about the Campaign in your organization's newsletters and alerts (you can find more Campaign tools here
  • Host an open house event at your office, a law firm, or bar association to invite folks to "Celebrate Campaign for Justice Month"

We hope to share more ideas and tools during October, so make sure to check both the Campaign website and LAAC's website in the next couple of weeks!

LAAC Advocacy

LAAC continues to update our Current Advocacy page (http://laaconline.org/currentadvocacy) with the status of this session's bills.

Pursuant to our advocacy policy, we do not take positions on many bills that may be of great interest to our members.

AB 1775 (Wieckowski)
LAAC supports  AB 1775 (Wieckowski), which has been signed into law by Gov. Brown and will be effective on July 31, 2013.

Thank you to those of you who submitted letters of support to help pass AB 1775.

AB 1775 will change the exempt earnings for wage garnishment from 25% weekly disposable earnings, or the amount the disposable earnings exceed 30 times the federal minimum wage, to 25% weekly disposable earnings, or the amount the disposable earnings exceed 40 times the California minimum wage.

SB 1088 (Price)
LAAC did not take a position on SB 1088 (Price), which has been signed by Governor Brown.

SB 1088 clarifies existing law by prohibiting a school from denying enrollment or readmission to a pupil on the basis that the youth has had contact with the juvenile justice system. It would also ensure that expelled students are given more than one opportunity to demonstrate that they have completed their rehabilitation plans, so that they can be readmitted to a regular school.

If you have any questions about advocacy, contact Denise at dwatt@laaconline.org.
