Your AC Needs Winterizing Too!
Winterizing your cooling system will help protect your valuable equipment and keep it operating efficiently during the next cooling season. Follow these steps to prepare for winter: - Turn off the exterior power. This will prevent your air conditioner from turning on, even if the thermostat is accidentally switched to cooling mode. If the air conditioner runs in winter, water will enter the condenser and freeze, damaging the system.
- Clean the outdoor unit. Do not allow dead leaves or grass clippings to collect around the base of the unit. You may have to clear the area around the unit several times before the end of autumn.
- Check for damage. Inspect the exterior casing of the outdoor unit for cracks, rust or broken seals. If you find any damage, contact Apollo for a more thorough inspection and any repairs.
- Put a cover on the outdoor unit. Air conditioner covers are relatively inexpensive, and they provide protection against the elements, lengthening equipment life and preventing damage from rust, debris and ice.
- Remember your air conditioner! Winterizing your cooling system is not a single step that is completed as soon as you put the cover on. Every time you shovel snow outside, clear the top of the outdoor unit, too. Snow and ice can become heavy, potentially damaging your equipment.

Insulated Attic - 20% Energy Savings This Winter
A well-insulated attic can save you up to 20% on your home's energy bills. Heated or cooled air leaks out of windows and doors, but the most can be expelled through the attic. Having proper insulation in your home is one of the easiest and most affordable ways to stop energy loss. That's why Apollo is partnering with Owens Corning and its AttiCatŪ Insulation Blowing System to help our members increase the comfort of their homes year-round, save on their energy bills, and make a significant positive impact on the environment.
Apollo chose the AttiCatŪ system because Owens Corning has been the industry leader in insulation for over 65 years, and their brand is preferred by homeowners seven to one! Plus the AttiCatŪ Expanding Blown-in Insulation System is quick and reliable, and delivers results with no mess. The AttiCatŪ system, combined with our expertise, will provide our members with a great solution for controlling energy costs. | Tips for Additional Winter Savings and Comfort
Keep the Air Filter Clean
The easiest way to ensure your system operatess at its highest efficiency is by keeping the air filter clean. There are several types of air filters and several possible locations for the air filter on your furnace. Ask Apollo's service technician next time he's out at your home to show you where your air filter is located and which type of air filter to use. If you have allergies, you should look at a pleated allergy filter or a media or electronic style air cleaner.
Keep Doors and Windows Closed
Close all doors and windows to the outside (even garage doors). This will reduce the heating load in the winter, making your heating system operate more economically.
Keep Vents and Grilles Unobstructed
Arrange your furniture and drapes so that all output vents and intake grilles are free from obstruction. This will also reduce the heating load on your furnace and allow for more economical operation.
Avoid Excess Use of Exhaust Fans
Excessive use of kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans will make your system work harder. Keep energy costs in check by making wise use of exhaust fans.
Control Direct Sunlight
Let the sun in during the winter to reduce the load on your heating system. Open window shades and remove awnings to increase direct sunlight and reduce heating bills.
Keep an Air Tight House
Ensure maximum retention of heated air by adding insulation to outside walls and to the attic of your home. Seal cracks and use insulated or storm doors and windows to prevent air leaks.
Fireplaces
Next time you cozy up to a crackling fire on a cold winter day, remember that wood-burning or masonry fireplaces are one of the most inefficient heat sources you can use. Fireplaces literally send your energy dollars right up the chimney in volumes of warm air escaping your home and cold air in return. If you use your fireplace while your central heating system is on, review Apollo's other Fall/Winter seasonal tips to help reduce energy losses. Remember to close the damper only after the ashes are cool and not smoldering any longer.
