Adult Education: Learning in Lent with Father Malloy

This Sunday, February 26th

Immediately following the 10:00am celebration of the Eucharist, we will gather for Adult Education on the Sundays of Lent.  Our theologian in residence, Fr Patrick Malloy, will teach the first week, and thereafter will partner with Mo. Susan.

Fr. Malloy is recognized as one of the finest pastoral liturgists in America, and his book Celebrating the Eucharist, is used by clergy and lay people who plan worship,  and by people who seek to better understand the richness of our tradition of common prayer.

In the weeks of Lent, we will learn some of the basics of our tradition and its liturgy,  and prepare, as a community, to celebrate the Triduum, the three holy days of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Great Vigil of Easter, which are the center days of the Church year. Activities for children will be available so that parents can attend,  and the entire community is invited and encouraged to participate in this unique opportunity.

Evening Prayer on Tuesdays: Praying in Lent

On Tuesdays evenings at 6:00 pm,  the community will gather for Evening Prayer in the Chapel, followed by a simple pot-luck supper. Members of our community will preside at this simple service of prayer. Bring a dish to share for supper, and come and allow the word of God to wash over you, and pray with the assembled community, as our ancestors did before us.

Quarters for Haiti: Giving in Lent

The Church of St. Sacrament and Transfiguration is in one of the poorest parts of Haiti, and their priest, Fr. Frederic Menales, a seminary friend of Mo. Susan's, contacted friends in America last week to say in the parish school, 150 children come every day to learn.  They come to school hungry, and they go home hungry.  The parish was damaged in the earthquake and is still in need of major repair, but even more than repairs to the building, Fr. Frederic wants help feeding the children in his care.  50 cents will feed one child a day.  The Rector, Wardens, Vestry, and Staff of St. John on the Mountain are honored to serve Jesus this Lent by helping to feed God's children in Haiti.  Children in our community will receive a tube of M&M candy, and are welcome to enjoy the chocolate...even in Lent!  The empty tube will hold 10 dollars in quarters, which will be sent to Haiti after Easter, to feed the children who study at St. Sacrament parish. When you see a kid in our parish, do not be surprised if you are shaken down for quarters.   "Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God" (Hebrews 13:16)
