LAURA CLINE:

UP TO THE CHALLENGE

"I have more good days than bad days," said Laura Cline, Wellness Center member. Three years after the symptoms began; Laura was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

When faced with the question of which exercise facility to join, the choice was easy. With Laura's high blood pressure, back problems and Parkinson's, the Wellness Center was a perfect fit.

"The people here are so positive, supportive and upbeat. I am amazed at the knowledge base among all the different exercise physiologists," says Laura. Click here to read Laura's story.

Q: How can I revamp my exercise routine this spring?

It is always good to change up your routine from the same old, same old so that your muscles do not become complacent. Rather than doing a chest press on a machine, why not try a weight bar? Incorporating this subtle change keeps your muscles from "knowing" what you are going to do next.

The weight bar is a one-piece steel bar encased in easy grip rubber for a secure and comfortable grip. The weight bar is user friendly, cost effective and versatile. Weight bars at the Wellness Center range from 9 to 18 pounds.

Below are some exercises with the weight bar to ramp up your routine.

  1. Lying Chest Press - [For pectorals muscles]
    1. Lie on the floor and bend your knees so both feet are on the floor. Grasp the bar in an overhand grip with hands slightly wider than shoulder width. Begin with the bar directly over your chest with your arms straight. Bend your elbows out to the sides to bring the bar toward your chest. Extend your elbows to return to starting position. Do 8 to 15 repetitions.
  2. Standing Bent Over Row - [For back muscles]
    1. Begin with your feet hip distance apart or wider, grasping the weight bar with an overhand grip. Tilt from the hips and let the bar hang at your knees. Your hands should be just outside your knees as you begin. Bend your elbows and pull back to bring the bar in towards your hips. Elbows should be tucked in close to the sides. Extend your elbows to return to the starting position. Do 8 to 15 repetitions.

The Wellness Center has all this tool and more plus classes where the weight bar is used. Please stop by and ask any of the staff member for assistance with each of the described exercises or ask about some new ones to add to your regiment! We are here for you! Check back next month for exercises involving the stability ball and resistance tubing!

Make Your Membership Work for You

Spring is here. Is your membership renewal period coming up? Some people don't rejoin this time of year because summers tend to be busy and they often think they will get their exercise outside.

Consider this:

  • For one-year members, you can put your membership on hold for up to 3 months and not lose a dime, so if the summer gets hectic, no problem.
  • While exercising outside is a great idea, will you really follow through when it is 90 degrees or raining? If you keep your membership you have options to keep your exercise routine on track no matter what the weather.
  • A one year membership is always your least expensive option, plus you get the 13th month free.

New Advisory Board Forming

The Wellness Center is currently forming a Member Advisory Board. The mission of this board will be to help improve member services and member retention.

Advisory Board members will be selected from current Wellness Center members and those who are not current members but were within the last 18 months. Additionally, those who have received specialized services over a period of time without membership, such as diabetes education or cardiac or pulmonary rehab, will also be considered for membership.

Obligations will include in-person meetings, no more than 2 to 3 times a year at the Wellness Center, on-line brief surveys and occasional e-mail communications. Members will also be expected to receive and read our monthly e-newsletter in order to stay informed of the latest news.  Board members should believe in the mission and goal of the Wellness Center but have ideas for improvement. The length of term will be 2 years.

To be considered for membership, please e-mail [email protected] with the subject line ADVISORY BOARD and brief explanation of why you would be a good choice.
