Greetings!
In February the Wellness Center is celebrating National Heart Month by offering several programs to bring awareness to the prevalence of heart disease. Please join us in our fight to reduce YOUR risk!
Getting Personal
Cardiac Rehab Saved Allan's Life
Allan Marlett has made drastic
life changes since his heart
attack last May.

"When I first started, I asked myself, do I have the determination to change?" said Wellness Center member Allan Marlett.

Last June Allan joined the Wellness Center's cardiac rehab program after having a heart attack. Allan was a typical meat and potatoes man whose only exercise was short walks with his dog.

The program offered him a detailed workout routine and helped with nutrition, heart health and exercise.

"I was really impressed with the presentations at the Wellness Center. They were well done and professional," said Allan. Click here to read the full story.

Q: My friend told me fat is good for me, is she crazy?

Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are GOOD fats. In moderate amounts they are critical to good health. Your body needs them to help lower your cholesterol, decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes, or to improve the health of those already diagnosed with it. These two essential fats help in brain function and the growth and development of your body. Monounsaturated fat is also high in vitamin E. Polyunsaturated fat provides your body with fats that it can't produce itself, like omega-6 and omega-3. Be sure to include some of these healthy fats in your diet, but limit the total fat to less than 25-35 percent of your total calories each day.

Saturated and trans fats, are BAD fats that raise your bad cholesterol and significantly increase risk for heart disease. You must read labels carefully to avoid trans fats. If the label says shortening, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil or hydrogenated vegetable oil, put it back - it contains trans fat. Saturated fat should make up less than 7 percent of your total calories. Trans fat should be limited to less than 1 percent of your calories. Eliminating trans fat completely is best.

Some items that seem healthy may actually contain bad fat. Did you know that some yogurts contain trans fat? Be sure to read food labels.

Estimate Your Risk for Heart Disease at the Wellness Center this Month
The Wellness Center invites members to calculate their 10-year risk for Cardiovascular Disease using a risk profile developed by the National Heart Institute. Score sheets are available for both men and women and will be available at our blood pressure station during the month of February. Please see any staff member if you need assistance filling out the form and interpreting your risk for heart disease. If the profile shows that you are at moderate or high risk, talk to the staff about ways to reduce your risk.
