Sara Freeman offers these tips to bounce back after
the holidays. |
Q: How do I bounce back into a regular exercise routine after the holidays?
Getting back into a exercise regimen (or just starting one) can be daunting, especially if it's been a while since physical activity has been a part of your lifestyle. Before blindly plowing back in, determine two items:
1) Why you stopped in the first place;
2) What makes you want to get started again?
What got you off the bandwagon? Was it lack of time, low energy, increasing boredom, injury, frustration....Once you understand your obstacles, you can take concrete steps to conquer them. For instance, if time management is an issue, make a habit of scheduling your workout as a permanent appointment in your planner. If you are plagued by an injury, see your healthcare provider to make sure that you can safely return to exercise, or if there are additional steps (such as physical therapy) you may need to take before fully returning to exercise.
What is your reason for resuming - the REAL reason? To lose weight - but why? Maybe you are really looking to increase your self-confidence. To improve your health - sure. But avoiding long-term medication may be at the heart of the issue. To have more energy? Of course! Keeping up with the demands of daily life takes staying power! Finding the true heart of the issue - your own personal "WHY" - can motivate you more than an overused half-truth.
On the physical side, expect that your fitness level may have decreased and start back appropriately. This helps avoid injury, which would set your back further. The Wellness Center staff can help you determine the best way to restart your program.
The New Year is a time of change for most people, and a change in your exercise program should be included. This will keep you from getting bored with your plan while helping to continually improve your fitness. If it's been a while since your program has had a facelift, the Wellness Center exercise physiologists can give you some fresh ideas. This is also a great time for a new challenge, like trying a new group exercise class or learning how to use free weights.
Are you ready? Are you committed? Do you know your "WHY"? Get excited - then get moving!
