Dave Graves continues to "Take Control" of his diabetes at the Wellness Center. |
Dave Took Control of His Diabetes
"I am in control," says Dave Graves. "I do not think of myself as a diabetic. I think of myself as a person with diabetes."
According to a 2011 report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), diabetes currently affects 25.8 million people - 8.3% of the U.S. population. And approximately 7 million of them don't know they have it.
Even Dave Graves, a member of the Wellness Center, was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes during his annual physical about two years ago. Dave decided he needed to make
some lifestyle changes and sought help through the Wellness Center after learning of its diabetes programs.

Ask the Expert |
 | |
Dr. Tabatabaeian, Endocrinologist with Fauquier Health | Q: My doctor just told me I was prediabetic, what should I do?
First, know that you are not alone. About 20 percent of the United States population has prediabetes. Prediabetics have higher than normal blood glucose levels, but not yet as high as those with diabetes. If caught early, and real changes are made, prediabetes can be reversed. If no action is taken, you will develop type 2 diabetes which could lead to a number of other health issues such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, blindness, limb amputation and heart disease.
Treatment may include lifestyle changes such as exercising regularly, weight management and a healthy diet. If these methods do not work, medication may be added. Often prediabetics have no symptoms, so annual health checkups are important. Ask your physician to screen you for diabetes during your next visit.
For further information or to schedule an appointment regarding prediabetes and diabetes, please contact Dr. Lida Tabatabaeian at 540-316-5940. |

Healthy Eating, Healthy Living |
Thanksgiving isn't only a time of giving thanks. Many people enjoy the tradition of gathering around a table loaded with a variety of side dishes, desserts, and of course, turkey. This year, indulge in some of those dishes without the guilt! Pumpkin Stuffing and Healthier Green Bean Casserole are healthier alternatives to your traditional sides.
Don't forget to save room for dessert! This year serve a warm Apple and Berry Pie. This sweet treat is low in fat and packed with fiber. |
