Q: Is a vegetarian diet really healthy?

Yes, a vegetarian diet can be healthy if you still consume a wide variety of foods to insure you reach your daily nutritional needs. When people think of the term vegetarian, they think of a diet without meat, fish or poultry. However, there are several variations on the vegetarian diet. The three most common types are:

  • Vegan, which excludes all meat and animal products, including dairy
  • Lacto vegetarian, which includes plant foods and dairy products
  • Lacto-ovo, which includes plant foods, dairy products and eggs

Aren Dodge, registered dietitian with Fauquier Health, offers these tips to eating healthy on a vegetarian diet.

Vegetarians need to pay special attention to a number of nutrients:

  • Vitamin B12 is a vitamin naturally only found in animal products. The average person should consume 2.4 mcg daily. B12 supplements are available as a substitute for meat products. Also, many soy products and cereals now are fortified with vitamin B12, but be sure to check the nutritional label to be sure.
  • Calcium is important for building and maintaining bones and teeth. Dairy products, while they are a great source of calcium, can be replaced naturally with some leafy greens such as collards or with fortified products like fortified soy milk.
  • When choosing a healthy vegetarian diet, also track your zinc, iron and vitamin D. Today, you can find many vegetarian substitutions for meat products in grocery stores and restaurants. Veggie burgers and tofu are great options.

To create a vegetarian diet plan today, you can contact Aren Dodge at (540) 316-2652.

If you prefer, you can pick up a paper copy at the Wellness Center front desk. Either way, please complete the survey by Saturday, October 29.

Fall into Fitness

autumn leaves

Fall into Fitness is a program to help members ramp up their fitness after a summer of vacations and a departure from routine. Members earn 'leaves' for completing certain goals and the leaves are entered in weekly prize drawings. Each week has a different focus. Week one will focus on back strengthening. Sign up today to get back into action.

The program started October 1, but there is still plenty of time to jump in!

Mixed Berry Coffee Cake

Try this Healthy Mixed Berry Coffee Cake. As the weather begins to turn cold and summer berries are no longer in season, try frozen berries as an alternative. They offer the same amount of nutrients as those that are picked at their peak freshness.

Kudos to Berny Hostrop

Don't wait until you have reached your final, best goal to celebrate your successes. For example, Berny Hostrop has lost 60 pounds! He says he still has 80 to go, but this is a significant accomplishment. We are proud of him, and he should be proud too. Kudos, Berny, on a job well done. We look forward to watching you reach your goal of losing 140 pounds!

Member Feedback- We Still Have Room in the Focus Group

We want to thank all of the readers who have kindly answered our monthly survey question. The answers help us understand what you like and what you need. To take this one step further, we are asking Wellness Center current or former members to sign up for a one-time focus group.

The focus group will allow us to get much more precise information than individual questionnaires can provide. This focus group is an opportunity for you to help us make the Wellness Center better. Everyone who participates will receive an appreciation gift.

The Wellness Center focus group will be held Tuesday, November 1, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.  There will be light refreshments. Information will be compiled and reported but no names will be revealed. The location is 170 West Shirley Ave., Suite 101 in Warrenton. [Across from the fire station and in front of the police station at the bottom of Hospital Hill.] Someone will greet you at the door. If you have questions about the focus group, call Gayla VandenBosche at 540-316-2604.
