Francisco continues on his quest for Wellness. |
Francisco Oporto Makes Dramatic Health Turnaround
One in six Americans has high cholesterol, about 16% of the population. In Fauquier, Rappahannock, Culpeper, Orange and Madison counties, statistics show almost 40% of adults have high cholesterol. Most people know they need to lower their numbers, but it is hard to find the motivation. Francisco Oporto has found his motivation- to stay healthy for himself and his loved ones.
Francisco has been a member of the Wellness Center for over a year. "When I first joined the Wellness Center, I was overweight with high cholesterol, above normal levels or uric acid and pre-diabetic." Francisco knew he faced serious health problems but it wasn't until he met with Aren Dodge, registered dietitian with Fauquier Health, that he finally decided to make a change.

Ask the Experts |
 | |
Dr. Hassan Tabandeh, cardiologist at Fauquier Health |
Q: I know HDL is good cholesterol and LDL is bad cholesterol,
but what are triglycerides?
Dr. Hassan Tabandeh, cardiologist at Fauquier Health, says triglycerides are usually checked as part of a cholesterol test. It is important to monitor their levels to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Cholesterol is a waxy type of fat found throughout your body. A small amount of cholesterol is needed for your body to function properly. While there are many types of cholesterol, the two most common types are low density lipoproteins (LDL) and high density lipoproteins (HDL). When your body has more LDL ("lousy" proteins) than needed, the proteins begin to stick to the blood vessel walls and cause buildup. HDL ("healthy" proteins) collect the excess cholesterol and redirect it to the liver where it is broken down. A healthy person should consume no more than 300 mg of cholesterol a day, whereas a person with heart issues should consume no more than 200 mg.
It is now recommended to have a lipoprotein profile instead of just a cholesterol test to measure your cholesterol level as well as your HDL, LDL and triglycerides. For LDL, an ideal level is anything less than 100 mg; for HDL, more than 40 mg for men and 50 mg for women; and for triglycerides, less than 150 mg is recommended.
Triglycerides are another type of lipid found in the bloodstream that factor into your total cholesterol value. When your body consumes calories, the excess calories are called triglycerides. These unused calories are stored in fat cells for energy. When your body absorbs more calories than it can burn, it can raise your triglyceride level.
High triglyceride levels usually correlate with diabetes and obesity, which can lead to heart disease. I encourage diet, weight loss, physical activity, and sometimes cholesterol lowering medications to help lower triglyceride levels and cholesterol levels.
During September, the Wellness Center will offer 20% off cholesterol screenings. This screening gives immediate results for total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides and glucose. Schedule your appointment today by calling 540.316.2640 or stop by the Wellness Center front desk.
Please follow these steps before you have the total cholesterol screening:
- Fast for at least 9 hours prior to testing with the exception of water. Drink plenty of water the morning of the test (hydration helps with blood flow), which in turn makes the blood draw easier.
- Do not take medications the morning of the test, unless they are critical. Bring them with you and take them after the test is performed.
Always consult your doctor to find out the best options for you. |

SUCCESS IS DEFINED BY YOU. Here are a few examples:
- If you set a goal of exercising 3 times a week and have accomplished it with some regularity.
- On an exercise machine you have only been able to use for 30 minutes, you can now last for 40!
- You succeeded in getting your spouse to finally join so you can get healthy together.
- You overcame your fear of trying new things and joined the Tai Chi class.
- You finally found the motivation to avoid stopping for fast food each day on your way home.

Healthy Eating, Healthy Living |
A twenty-year Harvard study of 120,000 people
showed that, on average, people gained a pound a year. Year by year that may not seem like a significant amount of weight, but multiply that number by 20 and it adds up. The study also showed, including more fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains into your diet can help with less weight gain.
Yogurt can contribute to weight loss, an average of 0.82 pounds every four years. Try these two yogurt recipes, Greek Chicken Pita Pocket and Hearty & Healthy Yogurt Crepes; they are full of those good foods to help ward off unwanted pounds.
Join Aren Dodge, registered dietitian at the Wellness Center, and Josh Gegoski, Chef of the Bistro on the Hill, at the Warrenton Farmers Market on Wednesday, September 21, between 10 a.m. and noon for a cooking demonstration and healthy eating information. Fauquier Hospital hosts the Farmers Market every Wednesday through October, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bistro entrance to the hospital on Hospital Hill in Warrenton.

Member Feedback- Focus Group Forming | | We want to thank all of the readers who have kindly answered our monthly survey question. The answers help us understand what you like and what you need. To take this one step further, we are asking Wellness Center current or former members to sign up for a one-time focus group to be held at the Wellness Center in October at a time convenient to participants.
The purpose of a focus group is to bring members and former members together to discuss a series of questions. This will allow us to get much more precise information than individual questionnaires can provide. This focus group is an opportunity for you to help make the Wellness Center better. Everyone who participates will receive an appreciation gift. If you have questions about the focus group, please call Gayla VandenBosche at 540-316-2604.
