Greetings!

May is National Arthritis month. Arthritis has affected 50 million adults in the United States today. Within the next 30 years, this number will increase to 67 million. Now is the time to learn how to take control of arthritis instead of letting it take control of you.

Conquering Arthritis-It is All About Choices

Costello

Linda Costello (left), RN, and LeAnn McCusker, Wellness Center director, exercise regularly to help with arthritis pain.

Arthritis is a common condition and risk increases with age. But pain and inactivity are not inevitable. Two Fauquier Health Wellness Center staffers have offered to share what they have learned about staying healthy and active with arthritis.

LeAnn McCusker, Wellness Center director, and Linda Costello, RN, were diagnosed with arthritis about a decade ago. They have since educated themselves and have learned strategies for lessening the discomfort.

Ask the Experts

Dr.Chhitwal

Dr. Nandini Chhitwal, Rheumatology

Q: I have arthritis. What nutrition and exercise advice can you offer to help manage my symptoms?

Dr. Nandini Chhitwal, a rheumatologist with Fauquier Health, diagnoses and treats a wide variety of disabling diseases, including arthritis. She uses a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to manage her patients' symptoms.

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

1. Physical activity is beneficial to everyone's overall health and well-being, including those with arthritis. The benefits can include: reduced pain and improved function and mobility. Consult your doctor or physical therapist before exercising to find out which exercises are best for you. Aqua therapy and yoga are often favored choices for those with arthritis as they can help reduce joint pain and improve flexibility.

2. Proper nutrition from a well-balanced diet to help alleviate arthritis symptoms. Weight loss can help improve pain. Inflammatory arthritis like gout can be prevented by avoiding certain foods like shellfish, red meat or beef.

3. The benefits of a healthy lifestyle vary from person to person. With my patients, I discuss all the treatment options, including medical, lifestyle, and alternative forms of therapy. I involve patients in their treatment plan because the more engaged a patient is, the more likely he or she is to follow the plan. When people feel empowered and in control of their health, they can work wonders.
