Linda DavidsonFauquier Health        Staffer Makes One Change for Health

When Linda Davidson arrived here from England 24 years ago she only planned to stay a couple of years, but sometimes life gets in the way, and she remains here today. That's also the way her weight gain happened as well, a little at a time, hardly noticeable at first. Perhaps it was too much American fast food or maybe the stress of adjusting to a new culture; it's hard to pinpoint any one reason. But when Linda heard about the Make One Change wellness program that Fauquier Health was offering to its employees, she decided it was time to lose those extra pounds. Man on BikeQ: What are some ways that exercise can help with stress relief?

A: Reactions to stress vary by person, but there are several strategies that can help you keep the negative effects of stress to a minimum: yoga, meditation, biofeedback, getting more sleep, eating a balanced diet, and the very best antidote to a stressful life: exercise. I know, you are thinking, "I am stressed because I already have too much to do. How can I fit in yet another activity?"  It may take some planning, rearranging and commitment, but the benefits are definitely worth it.

 

1. When you exercise your body produces endorphins, which help to make you happy.

2.While concentrating on exercising, whether it be a sport or simply jogging, you are focused on the task at hand and not thinking about the situations that are stressing you.

3. Long-term stress can lead to serious medical issues, which inevitably create more stress. By exercising, you help to alleviate stress and reduce stress-related illnesses.

4. Not only do you avoid stress-related illnesses, but exercise makes you healthier. The science is clear on this point.

 

Exercise is not the only effective stress relief method, but it is the only one that plays such an important role in your overall health and well being.

Make One Change

The Wellness Center's Make One Change program began a little over a week ago, and we are already hearing of personal accomplishments and excitement from our many participants. If you were unable to participate this time, don't worry, there will be another opportunity to participate in April. Don't forget to mark your calendars!

Healthy Eating, Healthy Living

Try this Classic Macaroni and Cheese-Only Healthier! You can help reduce the amount of fat by using low-fat cheese and skim milk. By substituting whole wheat pasta, you are increasing the Macaroni and Cheese amount of fiber. This recipe goes great paired with a fresh
