My Check Engine Light is on!
First understand that the check engine light is a warning indicator. It means that your computer has determined that a sensor or system in your emission control system is not working properly.
When the check engine light comes on, diagnostic trouble code(s) will be stored in the computers memory. At Action, our technician's have special computerized equipment that connects to the vehicle that can retrieve the codes, and also test the sensors for proper operation. Using the proper equipment and appropriate troubleshooting information, the root cause can be determined.
The check engine light is on, but my car runs normally.
Many times when the check engine light comes on, you may not notice any difference in performance, that is because some system faults do not affect vehicle driveability, such as the evaporative system. You may notice that the check engine light comes on for two days, and then goes off. The problem may be intermittent, when it failed the test the light came on, after it runs the test and it passes, it turned the light off, but the trouble codes will still be stored. The stored codes also store other vehicle data that help us to identify even intermittent problems.
My check engine light is flashing!
A flashing check engine light is indicating that a severe fault is occurring, usually cylinder misfiring, that can overheat, and cause damage to the catalytic converter. This is a very serious concern, the vehicle should not be driven. The driver can usually detect that the engine is not running correctly. The best advice is to pull over and have the vehicle towed-in for service.
What else can cause my check engine light to turn on?
There are over a hundred trouble codes that can set, each one has a different test parameter. Some codes can only set when the engine is cold, some only after driving several miles. Lower than normal engine temperature can set a code and turn the check engine on, same as a transmission that is not operating correctly. Most people know that a loose gas cap can turn your check engine light on, but did you know that having a dirty air filter can too?
